Survey: Digital Media Helps Make Web Access Top Priority For Europe

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

The results of AMD′s European survey into notebook usage paints a clear picture of our digitally oriented future as 77% of respondents claim they could not live without access to the internet. Compare this to 54% of people who say ‘car’ and 61% who say ‘washing machine′ as things they couldn’t live without and there′s no doubting the importance of the world wide web to our lives. People aren’t just browsing around either, since the biggest market that has driven this interest is digital media. 81% of people have uploaded digital photos over the last year, 77% watch videos on YouTube and 66% download music. In addition, 76% have gotten their hands dirty with online gaming, 51% of people have downloaded and 43% have streamed movies. In terms of the future many are citing visual quality as high on their list of demands, with almost half saying that graphics play a large part in a purchasing decision and further figures showing that the demand for HD content is always on the rise. With all these high-bandwidth activities sitting at the top of our list of priorities, we think it’s about time BT and pals put high-speed broadband a bit higher on theirs. - Paul Lester [MarketWatch] internet digital media online

Wii Music Not Doing Too Well, Nintendo Crosses Fingers

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

As part of a series of core titles that include the wildly popular Wii Sports, Wii Play and Wii Fit, Nintendo was expecting big things from Wii Music when it hit the shelves on October 20th. Sales figures so far do nothing to back up these ambitions as in the first 11 days just under 81,000 units were sold, according to raw NPD data. ‘Flop′ would be too harsh a term to use at this early stage, but when you consider that Wii Fit sold just under 688,000 units in a similar period earlier this year it must be causing concern in the Nintendo camp.Reasons for the low sales figures are that unlike the other key titles there’s no innovative new hardware supplied with the game. The rhythm gaming market is also well covered by best-sellers like Rock Band and Guitar Hero and perhaps consumers are deciding that there’s just nothing special enough about Wii Music to justify the expense. Nintendo isn’t panicking and uses the example of games like Brain Age, which started slowly but went on to sell 2.5million copies, as a more comparable model than its traditional best-sellers. - Paul Lester [Gamespot] Wii Wii Music consoles

Dodgy Asian Types Flogging Faux Blu-Ray Discs At Markets

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

If you′ve got any plans to head to Asia for pleasure or business in the near future, be aware that the dodgy characters floating around market stalls with wheelbarrows full of ‘100% genuine, high quality the best’ movies have found a new format to play with. Blu-ray is the flavour of the month and as usual most of the money used to create the things has gone into the packaging rather than the actual disc itself. While they may look legitimate, the Asian equivalent of ‘knock-off Nigel’ are apparently ripping and downgrading genuine Blu-ray discs to 1080i using the AVCHD codec that you′ll find in HD camcorders. The shrunken contents of their heinous activities are then being burnt to regular DVDs, slapped in a legitimate looking case and flogged on. Of course we wouldn’t expect most people to actually buy anything from these people if they have any hope of it being close to the quality of the original, but the old “it’s so cheap, no one’s gonna bother returning them″ marketing strategy is bound to generate some serious sales. - Paul Lester [TechRadar] Blu-ray HD pirates

Fujitsu’s Wraparound Camera For Perfect Parking

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

Having problems parking that Bentley in central London? No worries, Fujitsu has developed a wraparound camera for cars that offers the driver a 360-degree view of the car and its position to make it easier to park and manoeuvre. The system adapts to various driving situations, offering up a choice oif views best suited to stop you backing into Bugatti Veyrons and running over the feet of traffic wardens. OK, maybe not that last one. That means you can chose what view of your car and the surroundings you need in situations like “parking, passing on a narrow street, and seeing around corners at intersections with poor sightlines”.This latest system goes well beyond the typical camera-mounted systems in use right now. The Fujitsu version comprises 4 cameras installed around the vehicle’s perimeter, with the video images being synthesised by a “3-D virtual projection/point of view conversion technology”. They add: “Additionally, when switching between different views as the driving situation changes, this new technology makes a smooth transition from one view to another by continuously interpolating points of view, fields of view, and sightlines. This helps to quickly orient the driver to the new view currently being shown, when the driver makes periphery checks.” You know it’s only a matter of time before the steering wheel is replaced by a games console controller.-Martin Lynch cars news camera

The Boombox Wrist Watch Rocks Out The 1980s

November 18, 2008

For those of you who carried giant boomboxes on your shoulders in the 1980s or, ironically, those of you who wouldn’t be seen dead acting so lame, we have the Boombox Wristwatch from Flüd. Much smaller and kinder to shoulders than the real deal, this retro watch promises to bring back all those break-dancing memories while leaving out all the injuries. Featuring a 7-segment LED display, days of the week, big sticky-out buttons and absolutely nothing in the way of redeeming modern watch functionality, this tongue-placed-firmly-in-cheek timepiece really does require a certain kind of buyer. Or one less than 7-years old.Not afraid to stand out from the crowd? Then for £60 here [nothing retro about that price] add this to your T-Groove Animated t-shirt, your well hidden MC Hammer super pants and Knight Rider Sat-Nav. UK Surfers Stand To Lose £14,500 Each To Online Fraud

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

UK Internet users could be worth as much as £14,500 each to online fraudsters according to the latest figures from consumer online safety group, Get Safe Online. Working adults [based on an average salary of almost £24,000] could be had for up to £14,500 per online fraud attempt. Get Safe Online experts claim that internet fraudsters take as much advantage of a person’s accessible finances as they can in a short space of time, before moving on to the next victim. This includes emptying current and savings accounts, and spending the full limit of their credit cards. Now that an estimated 6 out of 10 of us manage our finances online, Get Safe Online - backed by the government, police and banks - thinks UK citizens need to be more vigilant than ever. Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online commented: “We are actively encouraging more people to go online, but in doing so, to ensure that they are safe and secure. We want to draw attention to the fact that online criminal activity can be a sophisticated business, but that each of us can take steps to prevent ourselves from becoming a victim. If internet users invest a relatively small amount of time and money in ensuring they are fully protected and up-to-date, the risk of such financial loss is almost negligible. To install the essential software and learn about the key safety measures on the Get Safe Online website takes a matter of a few hours - a small but worthwhile inconvenience compared to the potential loss.” UK citizens though are not complete fools it seems, with 85% now using some form of anti-virus software. That said, almost half of all UK Net users do not update their AV software frequently enough, 23% have no anti-spyware protection and 47% do not have any protection against ‘phishing’ attacks. Victims of phishing attacks in the UK have trebled in the past 12 months. If you need to know more about protecting the pennies and your ID online, find out more here.-Martin Lynch crime internet

Unhappy People Watch The Most TV [Shocker]

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

It’s true, not only will watching too much TV make you go blind or develop square eyes - like your mother told you - it will also make you more depressed. Raking through 30-years of results into studies of time-use and social attitudes of over 30,000 people, the University of Maryland has concluded that unhappy people watch more TV, while people who describe themselves as “very happy” spend more time reading and socialising. What, you mean daytime TV is bad for us? Maryland researchers reported that time spent watching TV might give a quick happiness fix but there’s “less positive effects in the long run”.University of Maryland sociologist John P. Robinson, the study co-author commented: “TV doesn’t really seem to satisfy people over the long haul the way that social involvement or reading a newspaper does. It’s more passive and may provide escape - especially when the news is as depressing as the economy itself. The data suggest to us that the TV habit may offer short-run pleasure at the expense of long-term malaise.” Here some of the key findings: Unhappy people watch an estimated 20% more television than very happy people, after taking into account their education, income, age and marital status - as well as other demographic predictors of both viewing and happiness. TV viewing is “easy.” Viewers don’t have to go anywhere, dress up, find company, plan ahead, expend energy, do any work or spend money in order to view. Combine these advantages with the immediate gratification offered by television, and you can understand why Americans spend more than half their free time as TV viewers, the researchers say. Unhappy people were also more likely to feel that they have unwanted extra time on their hands (51 percent) compared to very happy people (19 percent) and to feel rushed for time (35 percent vs. 23 percent). Having too much time and no clear way to fill it was the bigger burden of the two. I spend my days wishing for more time and I have very clear ways of how I’d fill it, probably starting with a few hours of watching all the TV programmes I record and never get time to watch. I’m happy, I swear.-Martin Lynch [Source] TV teleivision

$100 One Laptop Per Child Device Hits Europe Today

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

For the first time, Europeans will be able to buy the innovative X0-1 laptop by the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) charity scheme, starting tomorrow. We all know the device costs nearly double than the original $100 target and shoppers here will be able to get a pair for around £268. Why a pair? That’s what people from the 27 EU nations and a couple of non-EU countries will be asked to pay under the Give One, Get One (ˇˇ) scheme. The idea is that you buy two laptops, one for you and another which will be donated to a child that needs it in a developing nation. The OLPC scheme had hoped to sell millions of these cheap laptops to governments but it has hit one problem after another - not least of which is Intel’s rival Classmate laptop, which sells lots mote. The OLPC shacked up with Amazon last September to overcome delivery problems it was having getting the XO-1 to ˇˇ customers. Amazon’s European operations will be handling the launch today. The X0-1 on offer will be the Linux model.-Martin Lynch laptop olpc

Durable Bobcat Heavy-Duty Snow Blades Clear Snow Quickly

November 18, 2008

Bobcat-heavy-duty-snow-blades

Press Release

Bobcat Company introduces a new line of heavy-duty snow blades that provides snow-removal operators with a long-lasting tool that helps increase productivity. Primary features of these attachments include blade oscillation, a trip edge and a box-style mainframe.

Bobcat® heavy-duty snow blades are available in 86-, 96- and 108-inch models. These snow blades are approved for use on Bobcat S130 to S330 skid-steer loaders, T140 to T320 compact track loaders, V417 VersaHandler® telescopic tool carrier, and two Bobcat exclusives — the A300 all-wheel steer loader and Toolcat™ utility work machines.

A double-action cylinder angles the blade 30 degrees to the left or right. Angling the blade is controlled from the cab by a fingertip control, which allows the operator to adjust the blade without removing hands from the loader steering levers. The blade oscillates five degrees to keep in contact with the surface, preventing the need for multiple passes to clear snow.

Damage to snow blade components is prevented by the torsion spring trip edge should the snow blade come in contact with sections of raised concrete on sidewalks or other obstructions.

The box-style mainframe is a heavy-duty and durable design that will keep the snow blade working, especially when used on large-frame loaders. Most snow is cleared at night or in the early morning, when it is dark. For this reason, Bobcat has painted the snow blades orange so they are more easily seen by the operator.

Optional features include rubber or polyurethane cutting edges and end-wing kits. The end-wing kits make the attachment more versatile by allowing the snow blade to also be used as a snow pusher.

Fifty years ago, Bobcat Company unleashed a way to work better, smarter, faster. During 2008, the company is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bobcat compact equipment, which began with the Melroe Self-Propelled Loader — a three-wheeled front-end loader — in 1958. That machine evolved into the Bobcat skid-steer loader and spawned the worldwide compact equipment industry. Today, Bobcat continues to lead the world in the design, manufacture and distribution of compact equipment.

Bobcat Company, headquartered in West Fargo, N.D., is part of Doosan Infracore International (DII), a U.S.-based subsidiary of Doosan Infracore, a global manufacturer of construction equipment.

PowerStar Go Offers Emergency Charge For All Your Gadgets

Since we all love our gadgets and technology so much it’s a good idea to make sure they don’t run out of juice when we need them most. The latest in portable chargers is the PowerStar GO, which comes with a whole range of adaptors covering mobile phones, PDAs, iPods, portable games consoles, digital cameras and satnavs. It’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and holds enough power to fully charge a mobile phone five times, an iPod 15 times or a Nintendo DS up to three times. This is pretty impressive considering most rival devices are lucky to cover around half that, and if you only want to keep it for emergencies you can rest safe in the knowledge that it’ll retain its charge for up to a year. World Record Domino Attempt Topples Previous Effort

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

A new world record was recently been set for domino toppling when a staggering 4.3 million were lined up and knocked down live on TV. 85 people from 13 countries got involved (how much would you not want to be the guy that slips and knocks them over?) and it took eight weeks to get everything ready. As you can see from the video above, for some reason the former Miss Finland kicks (knocks) things off by dangling from the ceiling suspended by ropes. From this point a menagerie of shapes and images are revealed that include a birthday cake, Einstein, Paris Hilton, Fidel Castro and someone who looks like Mike Reid. It’s all pretty random but is still an amazing feat of precision and planning. We really think that 4.3 million is enough to leave the record alone now, though apparently these people meet up yearly to try and break it so who knows. - Paul Lester [BBC] domino world-record games

IXOS HDMI Switcher Offers Compact, Automatic Solution

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

Most modern HDTVs come with two or three HDMI ports but these won’t last long if you start piling up the games consoles, media streamers and set top boxes. To get around this you can buy an HDMI switcher, which is usually a fairly meaty device with a remote control that you need to use to tell it which port to activate. Not so with the IXOS Studio XHE228 though, which is a dual-port switcher that changes automatically. It supports HDMI version 1.3a, full 1080p resolutions and the connectors are gold plated to help prevent loss of quality. There’s also signal enhancer built in that helps prevent loss of quality at up to 15 meters. The XHE228 is pretty compact so we can imagine this being tucked neatly behind your A/V equipment quietly going about its business. It’s available now for £49.99, more details from the official site below. - Paul Lester [IXOS] IXOS HDMI home cinema

VIDEO: LEGO Safe - More Secure Than You’d Think

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

Remember that tale about the Three Little Pigs and the idiot one who built his house from straw and got deservedly eaten by the huffy-puffy wolf? You might be forgiven then for scoffing at the LEGO Safe. Weighing in at 14lbs, this LEGO NXT Safe is a little more secure than its component parts suggest but don′t, for a second, believe that we recommend you stash your diamonds and pearls in one. What it is though is another highly innovative use of LEGO NXT to create a safe that has a lock that requires 5, double-digit numbers - that’s a possible 305bn different combinations -and even sports a built-in motion sensor that triggers an alarm if anyone tries to move it. The little LCD allows you to enter the numbers by rotating those large LEGO wheels and you can hear the all the whirring and popping before the door opens electronically. We’re guessing it’s not sledgehammer-proof but as a Geek Den for all your gadgety bits it’s just perfect. Home 1.0 Nearly Ready

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

The marmite (you either love it or hate it) of the Sony universe is nearing completion. Well, not completion per say, more like … general release. Yes, you know that I’m talking about Home, the virtual world, which is Sony’s biggest, and in some ways desperate, attempt to clutch the attention of the massive casual gamer audience. That is the very audience that once adorned the PlayStation 2 and still does in huge numbers, not bad for a last-gen system eh?

Home has been nearing completion for a year or two now so no-one would be shocked in thinking this announcement is nothing special. But it seems that it is pretty much official as the software is almost at the big 1.0 version number. 1.0 surely equals and ready-to-go product yes? … well no. It seems that although Home is very close to being update to version 1.0 it may be a little while longer before the general public get hold of it.

TedtheDog, Home Community Manager, has posted a message on the official European PlayStation forum giving some details leading up to the full release. Apparently the Beta testers get a preview of 1.0 will do, then they get 1.0, SCEE will then invite more Beta testers and finally, assuming the servers survive the previous testing influx, Sony will think about the date to release it to us.

So hopes marginally higher than before, but keeping in mind the fact that beta testing each stage is likely to take several weeks I’d estimate the pre-Christmas plan for the Home release is getting quite tight!

Obama Nominates YouTube For ‘Fireside Chats’

November 18, 2008

President Elect Barack Obama used technology very well in his campaign to win the White House. Just ask Xbox LIVE gamers and iPhone owners. And, even with the White House in his pocket, he has no intention of stopping, making his first in a series of weekly addresses via YouTube. His first address at the weekend confirmed Obama’s love for technology and he plans to keep uploading his Saturday night addresses to YouTube. Of course, while YouTube was the first, his videos are now also being uploaded to other video services like Yahoo, MSN and AOL, among others. Some quibble that YouTube is not the proper forum for an incoming president but it didn’t stop former US president, Franklin D Roosevelt making his radio-based ‘Fireside Chats′ the most popular radio broadcasts back in the 1930s and 40s. e-Volve Gadget Shoulder Holster: Makes You Look Like a ‘Real’ Man

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

For those days when it’s illegal to carry firearms around [that's every day, right?] you can opt for this gadget alternative. Think of the e-Volve Gadget Shoulder Holster as your gun Nicorette. This unlikely gadget receptacle really is a product and, while it looks [marginally] more manly than the Man Bag, it also makes you look somewhat silly. Just check out that photo. The makers say: “The fashionable e-Volve Gadget Shoulder Holster is a new “carry all” shoulder holster that allows you to get all of your personal electronic gadgets off your belt, out of your pockets and into a comfortable shoulder holster. The e-Volve Gadget Shoulder Holster is designed to “evolve” and adapt to the reality of constant state of change in personal electronics by enabling you to wear your present and future gadgets. This evolutionary capability is achieved by a simple, but functional design of this ergonomic shoulder holster.” The two ‘quick-access pouches′ can be used to carry your iPod/PMP, PSP, DS, camera or phone and there’s a zippered pouch for your keys, cash, credit cards etc. Home Improvement’s Tim Allen would be making ape sounds right about now. This thing looks like someone failed to sell 10,000 Desert Eagle Shoulder Holsters and thought, ‘Hell, what am I going to do with these now?” I may sneer in derision but I know at least two people that would wear these proudly. The holster costs £47 here.-Martin Lynch gadgets news fashion

Aurora LED Pool Table

November 18, 2008

(0) Comments

There was a time when men felt the need to buy snooker tables for their damp basements but, now that the recession is upon us, a little downsizing might be in order. The Aurora LED Pool Table takes that old pub favourite and throws some LEDs into the mix to make it somewhat more tacky than the real thing. Still, the makers say it plays like the real deal, claiming it is “specially designed to replicate the play found on a commercial pub style British pool table”. The slate base though has been swapped out for the less traditional, but lighter and cheaper, MDF. The dimensions are the same as a commercial pool table, as are the pockets, rims and blue cloth. And, let’s not forget the ‘cool blue’ LED lighting for that floodlit effect. It also has a reversible top cover that allows you to turn it into a card table top and there’s a ‘holster’ at the end for storing pool cues. OK, we’re sold on the holster bit. We’re a little less sold on the £447 price tag.-Martin Lynch gadgets fun home

ButtKicker Brings Your Movie Chair To Life

If you like your movies and games with that extra bit of shake, rattle and roll, then may we introduce you to the latest chair-pounding ButtKicker. The Guitammer Company already does a line in pricey ButtKicker subwoofers designed to make your chair shake and rumble in time with the action on screen. The new wireless ButtKicker Kit is a cheaper solution to let you implement your own at home on a couch or chair. Obviosuly, don’t tell Gran, sit back and then watch her face as something blows up on the telly. ButtKicker’s low frequency audio transducers provide low frequency audio and realistic special effects, without loud volume. That’s their way of saying it’s silent but shakes your butt just as all that on-screen action is kicking off from your movies or games. They call it a ‘4-D experience′ and if you′ve ever been to a Disney or Universal Studios show where the seats react to what’s onscreen then you get the idea as it’s the same company that supplies them. Oh, and it’s wireless, to keep your living room partner-friendly. It starts shipping at the end of the week from Amazon, priced [US first] at around £200.
