      PSN Store Update (US) 28/08/08

      August 31, 2008

      (0) Comments

The US PSN store update this week is quite similar to the recent EU update. The best item again is the Warhawk add-on pack, Operation Fallen Star. Unless of course you don’t already own any of the previous packs released by Warhawks developers, Incognito, in which case you should go for the “Warhawk Booster Combo”. The combo pack contains all three current add-ons for Warhawk, including the previous two operation packs, for a nice discounted price.
Most of the trailers are mediocre, with the only one offering a worthwhile look is the LBP “Sackzilla” trailer. There is a playable demo for Soul Calibur IV in case you were sitting on the fence for that title.

      Official: Steve Jobs Not Dead

      August 31, 2008

      (0) Comments

We all know Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, has suffered some cancer scares in recent years and has, to be fair, been looking a wee bit thinner than is probably healthy but I bet even Steve was surprised to find out yesterday that he had died. Bloomberg Business News mistakenly sent out Steve’s obituary to thousands of clients online despite it being marked “Hold for release – Do not use’. In it, there was recent praise about Steve from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and even some ancient praise by Bill Gates from 1998. Bill said: “In terms of an inspirational leader, Steve Jobs is really the best I’ve ever met. He’s got a belief in the excellence of products. He’s able to communicate that.” Bloomberg commented on the error: “An incomplete story referencing Apple was inadvertently published by Bloomberg News at 4:27pm New York time today. The item was never meant for publication and has been retracted.” Somehow, I’d say Steve is having the biggest laugh.-Martin Lynch apple steve jobs death

LG Injects Sex Appeal Into DVD Players

      August 31, 2008

      (0) Comments

It’s been a long time since DVD players were considered cool and even longer since they gave off even a whiff of sex appeal, but LG has certainly injected a little heat into the now bland DVD arena with its DVS450H DVD. Aside from the crappy name, the player is a real design treat, standing thin and tall with a glossy black finish and minimalist controls. It can stand horizontally or vertically and is suitable for wall mounting, just so everyone can ‘ooh’ over your gadget sense of style. It sports a HDMI port and claims upscaling of regular DVDs to near HD. It also supports DivX, WMA, DivX HD, Xvid-H, MP3 and JPEG playback and comes with a USB port for connecting to your external hard disk drive, filled with all the video content you nicked off the Net. Due out in October it will be priced at around £130.-Martin Lynch dvd movies gadgets

Firefox Improvements Could Make Browsing ’20 To 40 Times Faster’

      August 31, 2008

      (0) Comments

Most people seem to be pretty content with using Mozilla’s Firefox as a healthy alternative to Internet Explorer, the latest version of which set a new record for the most downloads in a 24-hour period. Firefox 4 is already being talked about in some circles, with one of the biggest reveals being a substantial speed increase due to the way the browser streamlines the loading of pages. Well, a cut-down version of this will allegedly be available for the current version when it gets updated to 3.1. If you’re interested in reading about how this works in detail check out the link below, where you’ll become familiar with technical terms such as nanojit and spidermonkeys. We’ll attempt to summarise here by saying that the optimisation engine works by increasing the speed at which the browser can handle Javascript by “recording the path of execution at runtime and generating compiled code that can be used the next time a particular path is reached″. In other words, it remembers what it has done before and simply repeats the commands instead of reloading them. Most importantly, Mozilla reckons this could yield performance improvements of 20 to 40 times faster than current methods. No date has been set yet for the release of the 3.1 update, which is currently in Alpha 2 stage, but we’ll certainly be keeping our eyes open for more information. – Paul Lester [ArsTechnica] Firefox browser java

IFA 2008: Gear4 Offers New Levels Of Clarity For FM Transmitters

      August 31, 2008

      (0) Comments

If you’re into your music and have been looking around for a new or nearly-new car you may have noticed that most of them tend to have CD players built into the dash. Why is this a problem? Because A) What are CDs? And B) They can’t be removed and replaced with a decent stereo that can handle your iPod or MP3 player. Of course some high-spec models do come with iPod support but you’re often paying over the odds for this, so the simplest and cheapest solution is to pick up an FM transmitter.Since the technology was legalised in this country there have been dozens of models released that look to solve this problem but most suffer from inconsistent performance and don’t exactly promote a tidy setup. Gear4 has done a few of these itself in the past but two new models, announced at this year’s IFA, look on paper at least to be far more capable. Utilising a technology called ‘Follow Me’, the devices adjust the FM transmitter and car radio to a clearer frequency automatically at the touch of a button. This works alongside ‘ClearSearch’ which stores five of the clearest frequencies in your area and allows you to scroll through them with ease. The two new products that are taking advantage of this are the CarDock FM and AirZone FM. As the name suggests, the former is designed specifically for in-car use and comes with an adjustable cigarette lighter charger attached that can power your iPod. It’s compatible with any iPod or iPhone and comes with a range of dock connectors. The AirZone is a more compact offering that simply attaches to your iPod and transmits tunes. Both are available from September with the Airzone priced at £39.99 and the in-car version at £49.99. – Paul Lester [Gear4] Gear4 iPod FM

Rock Out With The Lord: Guitar Hero Ripoff For Christians

      August 31, 2008

If you’ve been happily jamming along to tunes like ’666 – The Number of the Beast’ on Guitar Hero but can′t quite put your finger on why there’s a lingering feeling of guilt and impending damnation, this could be for you. It’s the devil’s music you see, and god hath no fury like a nagging wife trying to watch her soaps while you’re rocking your socks off to some of Lucifer′s favourite licks. Perhaps ‘Guitar Praise’ will show her your good intentions since as we all know, there’s nothing like hammering out face-melting solos while simultaneously repenting your sins. Obviously some people think so anyway. The product is coming soon to Macs and PCs and for $100 you get a wireless guitar and playlist of ‘exciting’ Christian music and bands. Remember such tracks as ‘Made to Worship’, ‘Jesus Freak’ and ‘Reap and Sow’? Neither do we. But creators DigitalPraise.com seem confident that people will want to “grab their guitar and start rockin′ with the best while praising the Lord”. Back on the Devil’s side of the fence it’s been recently announced that Rock Band 2 will be getting six more DLC albums, including The Chili′s excellent Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Megadeth’s Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying and Jane’s Addiction′s Nothing’s Shocking. IFA 2008: Samsung Turns On The Style With New BD-P2500 Blu-ray Player

      August 31, 2008

      (0) Comments

Blu-ray players are generally fatties but Samsung has thrown its latest 5th-gen player, the BD-P2500 on a treadmill while cramming in everything but the kitchen sink. The new player was unveiled today at the IFA 2008 show in Berlin and the minimalist styling looks tasty indeed. It’s compatible ‘out-of-the-box’ with the latest Blu-ray interactive features like BD Live (Profile 2.0), Bonus View (Profile 1.1) and uses the award-winning Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) chip for processing video, while supporting 7.1-channel sound systems. It comes with a built-in, wired Ethernet connection, 1GB of internal Flash memory and a USB port for memory expansion. On the audio front, the BD-P2500 can output Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS as an uncompressed PCM signal, as a bitstream, or via the 7.1 analog outputs. Also, support for DTS-HD HR (High Resolution) decoding will arrive with a firmware update. When you think that Yamaha had the audacity to launch its first Blu-ray player this week with no Ethernet and inferior features for a whopping $1,200 (£600), it’s amazing that Samsung will be shipping the BD-P2500 for $500 – around £250. Obviously that price will rise a bit here but we are finally starting to see highly specified players with less galling price tags. I still won′t be happy though until they start costing under £200 here.-Martin Lynch blu-ray movies samsung

Philips CinemaOne: Tiny Home Cinema & iPod Music System

      August 31, 2008

Looking like something that should have wheels and be zipping around cleaning the corridors of Imperial Star Destroyers, the new Philips CinemaOne is offering shoppers a one-stop solution for their iPod and home cinema needs. This dinky little unit – roughly the size of a football – is deceptive in what it houses, which includes a DVD/CD player, 5-channel home cinema amplifier, iPod dock, 6 internal speakers and a 4in subwoofer. The speakers are situated around the device and angled to provide some form of pseudo surround while the iPod can be controlled using the CinemaOne’s remote control. The DVD player supports DivX, MPEG-4 and WMV files too as well as upscaling video to near HD picture quality. There’s a HDMI output and USB port alongside the usual audio connections. I’d love to tell you that it will cost the same as a football too but I can′t. In fact, Phillips have been remiss in actually telling anyone when this will roll out and how much damage it will do to wallets.-Martin Lynch gadget cinema ipod

IFA 2008: Samsung x360 Laptop ‘Lighter Than (MacBook) Air’

      August 31, 2008

      (0) Comments

Samsung thinks Apple shouldn’t get all the limelight when it comes to skinny laptops and it’s planning to win the Size 0 contest next month with its beautiful looking x360. Despite sounding like a certain games console, Samsung has managed to bring its X360 in at 1.27Kg, a little under the Apple MacBook Air offering, while managing to equal or better what’s under the hood. It sports a 13.3in LED display capable of 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and is powered by an Ultra Low Voltage Centrino 2 processor with up to 4GB of Ram. There’s a choice of 64GB or 128GB SSDs (Solid State Drives), a generous 3 USB ports and HDMI port, finger print scanner, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and a 7-in-1 card reader. A 3G option will added before the end of the year. Battery life is rated at a very healthy 10 hours – compared to 5 on the Air – but, how many of those hours are while working? However, that’s where the Air comparison ends as it’s a bit chunkier. While the Air comes in at 0.16in to 0.76in from front to back, the X360 is 0.66in to 1.2in. It’s due out in the next month or so with prices starting at around £1,120 and rising to £1,600.-Martin Lynch laptop notebook

IFA 2008: Sony Unveils ‘Skinniest TV’ With The Sexy Bravia ZX1

      August 31, 2008

      (0) Comments

The battle for the skinniest LCD TV continues this week with Sony unveiling the Bravia ZX1 at the IFA 2008 show, which is just 9.9mm at its thinnest. The 40in ZX1 sure is anorexic and compares favourably to the other super-skinnys like the Hitachi UT models or the Sharp X Series AQUOS LCD TVs but the real innovation is Sony’s ability to make all those unsightly cables disappear. The TV comes with a separate receiver device called the Media Receiver, a box that you plug all your cables into and which transmits the signal wirelessly to the TV in ‘real time’, using something Sony calls ‘Bravia 1080 Wireless’. Attach your PS3, set-top box or DVD/Blu-ray player to Media Receiver, stash it anywhere in the room and watch as BRAVIA 1080 Wireless, which Sony calls a ‘ground-breaking high definition, high-speed wireless connection capable of real time transmission of HD signals’ does its party trick. The Media Receiver has 3 HDMI slots [with one more on the TV] and also contains an MPEG4 AVC-HD2 tuner as well as DVB-T and DVB-ʡ digital broadcast and cable tuners. The ZX1′s display is lit from the sides by LED arrays instead of the usual CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) backlighting and, the good news is that, it’s almost here, not a ‘concept’. It goes on sale in Japan first in November with a price tag of around £2,250.-Martin Lynch TV HDTV LCD

Mythbusters Paint Mona Lisa In One Go With 1,100-Barrel Paint Gun

      August 31, 2008

      (0) Comments

Leonardo Da Vinci might have worked painstakingly on the Mona Lisa and her enigmatic smile but the crowd at Mythbusters managed their own version in less than a second at nVidia’s NVISION event this week. Of course, the duo of Adam and Jamie were going to have to pull it off in style, if they wanted to demonstrate the difference between single-core CPUs and multi-core graphics processing units (GPUs). And that they did, with the help of an 1100-barrel paint gun that fired all the paint simultaneously. The result: a pretty recognisable Mona Lisa, despite the dripping. To break it down, we are talking about 2,100 paint balls hurtling to the reinforced canvas 8-feet away in just 275ms. There are those who would argue that the experiment was too simplistic to really capture the complexity of different processor architectures but, when the show is this good, who gives a damn?-Martin Lynch [Crunchgear] technology art

      TomTom-XL Review – PC Advisor

      TomTom-XL

PC Advisor have published a review of the TomTom-XL navigator.
‘The XL is the first of a new breed of TomTom devices that sports a slimmed down cradle unit. For drivers fed up with the chunky cradles and curved armatures that usually accompany satnav units, the TomTom XL’s new EasyPort mount design will be great news. The TomTom XL twists in and out of the circular retaining bracket and can be angled forward as far as you need so the screen is clearly visible to the driver. The whole setup of the TomTom XL feels secure and more robust – we managed to snap the top off the brittle stalk on a TomTom device we tested a year or so ago. The new design was therefore a reassuring development.’
