Unlocked iPhones now available through Apple HK
While for the most part Apple has been firm in selling the iPhone locked to a particular network, they seem to have softened up a little bit in the Hong Kong region as they’re now selling it unlocked and carrier-free. The 8GB model is selling for HK$5400, while the 16GB variant is pegged at HK$ 6200. Roughly converted to US currency, that’s $692 and $794 respectively. Yeah, it’s still a bit more expensive than the PAYG prices of AT&T, but hey, at least now the option is there.
Actually, this brings forth a whole new possibility. It might be a long shot, but if it happened in Hong Kong, who’s to say that it won’t eventually spill over to other regions of the world. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Apple considers offering it carrier-free to more countries as this will not only create added revenue to the company, but it will also give consumers, especially those who love to switch networks every now and then, a viable iPhone solution.
