In addition to the 120GB and 160GB capacities provided by Toshiba’s 5,400 rpm S-ATA HDD drives at just 1.8 inches thickness, the company has introduced the world’s first 250GB model for laptop computers.
The new high-performance hard disk drive included in the MKxx29GSG series, enables 3Gb/s interface speeds at 5,400 rpm in both laptops and netbook computers. In addition, the fall sensor protection ensures you won’t lose the data stored on the hard drive in case you drop the computer or hit it accidentally.

Before the 250GB 1.8-inch SATA HDD model, Toshiba made available the P-ATA version with 240GB storage capacity, on which the new model’s design is based on. Miniaturization of the hard drive allows notebook manufacturers to build smaller and thinner form factors for greater portability and lightweight mobile solutions, without to sacrify performance.
More than these, the new hard disk drives consume lower power by pushing areal densities to 378.8
Gb/iю, and the M򷮑GSG module reaches 0.0016 watts-per-GB power efficiency, which increases laptop’s battery operating time significantly.

“Portable PCs continue to make the transition to the SATA interface. IDC estimates that 84 percent of mobile HDD shipments in the second quarter of 2008 were SATA,” said John Rydning, research director at IDC. “Toshiba’s implementation of SATA 3.0 GB/s for its new 1.8-inch HDD product line will facilitate adoption in a broad range of portable PC form factors.”

According to the September press release, Toshiba managed to ship 60 million 1.8-inch HDD drives, maintaining the first position in the top of this market sector.
To keep it green, like the other large PC components manufacturers, Toshiba eliminated several chemical substances from the manufacturing process such as hazardous halogens.
Specifications of the new hard drive with 250GB include up to 707.9Mbps transfer rate, 15ms seek time, 8MB buffer memory. It measures 54 x 78.5 x 8 mm at 62 grams.

“As 1.8-inch HDDs grow in capacity and performance, they offer a compelling value proposition for a broader array of mobile PCs, including high-volume notebooks,” said Maciek Brzeski, vice-president of marketing, Toshiba Storage Device Division. “Combining a quarter terabyte of storage with the data transfer capabilities essential to the PC environment marks a critical step in driving 1.8-inch HDD adoption into a broader array of PC configurations. The MKxx29GSG line will accelerate growth in mobile, thin-and-light and sub-notebook categories as a result of enhanced functionality.”
