Remote PC Connection via Cell Phone on Lenovo ThinkPads

November 30, 2008

<-125x125 Button - right->
I’m glad to discover lately that more and more laptop manufacturers start to offer additional important features to their new models, especially when I read about the security enhancements. Besides the pre-installed software for data protection, there is the Trusted Platform Module, the fingerprint scanner, the cable slot lock and now the advanced user-enabled remote protection. One example is Lenovo’s Constant Secure Remote Disable, which will come on the upcoming Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks prepared for release in stores in the first quarter of the next year.

In simple words, the Constant Secure Remote Disable works like this:
You compose a key text message on your cell phone, like for example “lockdown now PC” or “PC shut off” , and send it to your notebook. As soon as it receives it, the system becomes inoperable, cutting the thief’s access to all its commands, and you will receive a message when the command has been executed. At a later time, in order to activate the computer, you’ll have to enter a special password.

Lenovo teamed up with Phoenix Technologies to build this advanced capability for its upcoming laptop computers, but we’ll find out more at the time of release.

“Remote Disable dramatically reduces the anxiety and waiting people often experience when they’ve been the victim of a lost or stolen notebook PC,” said Bob Galush, vice president, Software and Peripherals Marketing, Lenovo.” Through our work with Phoenix, we are able to reduce customers’ security risks and potential exposure of their confidential data when their ThinkPad notebook is lost or stolen. Combined with features like built-in biometric fingerprint readers, full hard drive encryption and embedded security chips, Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks offer the latest industry-leading PC security technologies.”

QiGi i6 provides Windows Mobile, Android OS options

November 30, 2008

Before you dismiss this as another cheap imitation of a popular mobile phone, you might be interested to know that the QiGi i6 is available with either Windows Mobile or Android under the hood.

While OS options are mostly limited to computers, China’s QiGi is apparently now offering the same option for their i6 mobile phone. True, the HTC Touch-like exterior is a bit of a turn-off, but the specs are nonetheless pretty decent. The QiGi i6 comes with a 2.8-inch touchscreen, 624MHz processor, 2-megapixel camera, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. No 3G, but I guess the rest of its features will be more than enough for the average mobile phone user.

The thought of having OS options is indeed tempting, but I highly doubt that this particular model will be headed towards the North American region anytime soon. However, I am hopeful that this will get the ball rolling in providing consumers with the ability to choose the mobile operating system which best suits their mobile phones. It might be a far fetched idea, but if it’s possible in China, why not elsewhere?

Apple Investigates MacBook Problems

November 30, 2008

(0) Comments

They may be sleek and pretty as a picture but the latest Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops have been hit by a series of mysterious graphics-related issues. The company has said that it is now investigating two separate graphics-related problems that are affecting its new MacBook line-up. The first one, ominously dubbed ‘the black screen of death′ by victims, occurs on MacBook Pros when users are playing games. Screens go black, the laptop freezes and the audio goes in infinite loop playback. The problem affects models running Windows or Mac OS X while playing games like Call of Duty 4, World of Warcraft, Ages of Empire III, Command and Conquer, Oblivion, Company of Heroes, among others. The second issue, which is affecting some MacBooks and MacBook Pros, manifests as wavy video distortions while scrolling Web pages and watching HD content. The issue does not occur on Windows based Macs and it thought to be an issue with nVidia’s Mac drivers. Anyone out there having these issues, let us know.-Martin Lynch [Apple Insider] apple laptop macbook notebook

Now here we are presenting you great gadget technology to preempt crime that is new CCTV technology. 142 cameras have been upgraded with software called Perceptrak, designed by Smart CCTV Ltd. and programmed to distinguish suspect behavior like people wait for too long, cars going too fast or groups assembly in drug dealing hotspots. Really what a smart technology to find crime and prevents us from dangerous disaster.

These incidents are then flagged for the attention of a human operator, who can monitor the situation and decide whether something fishy is going on that warrants further inquiry. It provides you a smart and sharp way to deal with crime. It effectively allows CCTV staff to monitor more cameras than before because they do not have be constantly watching each screen to see crimes taking place.

According to Havant firm it gives to the control room it finds that the crime is taking place. This is a fantastic development. It acts like a night watchman, but unlike a night watchman it never blinks, it never takes a break and it never gets bored. This great CCTV technology is no longer affected by darkness it find out crime even in dark.

BlackBerry Javelin now (Sort of) Available on Rogers

November 29, 2008

(0) Comments

Those waiting for the BlackBerry 8900 Curve, or more commonly referred to as the Javelin, might not have to wait for next year to get their hands on one. Apparently, Rogers has quietly launched the 8900 and available for $179.99 on a 3-yr contract of $45 or more voice and data plan, $499.99 on a 2-yr contract with data plan, $524 for 2 years with no data, and $549 for a single year or month-to-month. Unfortunately, after news broke out that the 8900 is now available on Rogers, it looks like it’s out-of-stock already which begs the question: is the BlackBerry 8900 Curve that popular that it’s sold out already or are they just taking orders for a device that they have yet to receive?

Anyway, we’ll probably hear an official announcement from Rogers pretty soon. For now, you can take your chances with a competent Rogers CSR who might be willing to take your order and place you on a priority list when the new stock of the Javelin arrives. If not, you can just wait for the official launch which, in light of this recent development, we’re hoping will happen before Christmas.

Friday Wrap Up

November 29, 2008

(0) Comments

Competition, sale, limited editions and a milestone in this Thanksgiving weekend’s Nintendo News roundup.

Report: PSP game sales robust, DS sales amazing
This is a comparative study on the DS and PSP. The reports states that although DS games sold more than PSP games, most bestselling DS games are made by Nintendo. The opposite is with the PSP wherein third party developers enjoy success with their games.

Wal-Mart to sell $16 Wii, DS titles
Wal-Mart places several titles on sale this Friday. Games that will be having their price cut are Game Party, Cooking Mama: Cook Off, and Namco Museum Remix.

Nintendo to Ship Limited Edition DS on Friday
As a Thanksgiving gift, Nintendo will be releasing two special edition bundles. Mario Red Bundle would feature a DS with an M in its front. It would come with New Super Mario Bros. Then there’s the Ice Blue bundle that will come with Brain Age. I wish that they released DSi instead.

Wii Sales Hit 7 Million Milestone In Japan
It’s Thanksgiving time for Nintendo Japan. Japanese consumers have already bought 7 million Wiis in Japan alone. I guess the market is not saturated yet.

    Sharp’s New Blu-ray Player Costs £200

    November 29, 2008

    (0) Comments

Last Christmas, Blu-ray players costs an obscene amount of money and, while they aren’t exactly cheap now, they are heading in the right direction and becoming affordable for most consumers. Sharp’s BD-HP21H has just hit the UK and despite the sticker price of £250, you can find this player online for a shade under £200. This is a Profile 1.1 player with 1080p support and 24 frames per second (fps) playback, meaning the movies run at the same speed they were filmed at and make motion-scenes much smoother and clearer. The machine also promises to upscale your DVDs to near-HD quality and the HDMI 1.3 jack offers support for Deep Color as well as advanced sound formats like Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Advanced.Blu-ray players can take an age to start up but the BD-HP21H has a Quick Start feature which means you’ll be up and running in 10 seconds. There′s no memory card slot but you can read JPEG photos from blank CDS. And for those worried about bills, the player promises low power consumption: 26W in operation and 0.5W in stand-by.-Martin Lynch blu-ray movies

WaterMill Sucks Water From The Air

    November 29, 2008

    (0) Comments

Tired of tasting chemicals in your water? Is your expensive mineral water habit under threat by the recession? Then watch out, the Canadians are coming. A bunch of eco-inventors at Element Four have created WaterMill, a product designed to make getting clean water from the air outside possible for everyone. Well, everyone with money, that is. Looking like a big smoke alarm, it sits outside and, powered by about the same amount of electricity as 3 light bulbs, it can make up to 12 litres of fresh, clean water a day. It works by sucking air through filters which remove dust and any other particles before cooling it to the below the point that dew forms. The condensed water is then cleaned up in a self-sterilisation chamber, complete with UV light, to kill-off any little nasties. It’s then filtered again and passed inside the house via a pipe to your fridge or tap. OK, 12 litres a day is hardly going take care of all your needs but the company hopes this will appeal to those with eco-friendly hearts who know that the bottled water industry costs tens of billions of pounds every year globally in plastic bottle creation and recycling. Eco-friendly it may be but recession-friendly it is not, as it will cost around £780 when it launches in the UK, US, Italy, Japan and Australia next Spring.-Martin Lynch [Element Four via Guardian] recycling environment gadget

Nokia Home Control Center Puts House Control In Your Phone

    November 29, 2008

    (0) Comments

Not content with ruling the mobile phone market, Nokia is now eyeing up our homes by announcing a platform that will let us control ‘smart homes’ from our mobile phones. There are already lots of smart-home products out there from fridges with TVs and Net access to smart heating systems, intelligent biometric security systems and energy-saving washer/dryers but they all boast proprietary technology, command languages and remote controls. The Nokia Home Control Center will be Linux-based and allow makers of smart home techs to quickly create a method of controlling their products via the phone and the Web. It will enable grouping of different items and the interface will be ‘simple’ for people to use. Nokia explains: “It will be possible for example to monitor and control electricity usage, to switch devices on and off, and monitor different objects, such as temperature, camera, and motion. On one hand, Nokia Home Control Center can be used as WLAN gateway. On the other hand, the platform covers everything from a basic security solution to a more sophisticated heating control system. Users are free to build a solution that fits to their needs and expand it whenever they want.” Nokia is recruiting partners now and Home Control is due to launch at the end of next year. Now all we need is a smart house.-Martin Lynch [Nokia] technology smart home nokia

LG Prada II, now with Bluetooth link watch

The collaboration between Prada and LG continue, this time it is already recognized as a touch screen mobile version II with additional side full keyboard, WiFi, 3G and five-mega pixel camera. And so we also apart from for the writing or anything Prada iges are still unaware of exclusive multimedia content on it, such as in 2008 autumn / winter catalog of Prada Prada and animated movies, setting issue and the like.

But the star of this new collaborationist not in fact the new edition of the fashion phones, but the supplementary clock called Bluetooth link, the display on their call for an inward bound caller’s number or the name of the contact states also have received SMS not only informed but also shows quite without his cell phone that one out of the bag must fetch. The watch band is from Pradas black Staffing leather. Very chic, but would like both without the Prada sign even better (but with this I think is probably pretty lonely there). Together a luxurious fun: The Prada II is for 600, the Prada link Watch soon for 300 Erotic to have.

MSI also has resisted the creation of a new invention brought to the base of ultraportable, a Nettop. They have submitted a sort of cross between an all-in-one PC and an ultraportable, much like the Asus Eee Top. Come with a 18.5-inch screen capable of reaching a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, 1GB or 2GB of RAM, between 120 and 250GB hard drive, DVD burner, integrated webcam (VGA), card reader, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR and 802.11g WiFi.

Optionally one can buy a digital TV tuner, but in its most basic models do not go up the price of 500 euros. It’s the same case that the ultraportable, covers the needs of many people, despite the fact that many of us seem very basic. But the PC is between 500 and 600 euros and it comes around, including screen, it’s easy to choose what people with no experience as the first PC, like the ultraportable.
