PS3 Game Vending Machine Plus Music and Blu-Rays

November 3, 2008

Sony and Universal have teamed up to create “POP”, a vending machine-like service, offering a range of media products.

Anybody got a Corn machine to with this?

Anybody got a "Corn" machine to go with this?

The machines can distribute PlayStation 3 games, Blu-Rays, DVDs and Music CDs. But that’s not all, if a customer wishes; there is also an option to copy some of the products directly to electronic storage devices. Music and films can be transferred to the majority of MP3 and MP4 players. Alternatively, consumers can use a generic storage device, such as a USB memory stick or an SD memory card (no mention of Sony’s own pro duo’s!).

Information regarding any DRM (Digital Rights Management) included is scarce. So if you choose to get a digital copy, be sure to check it the copying capabilities first.

At the moment the “POP” machines are only available in the UK, but I’m sure pending a successful test run they will shift to global production. There is no release date announced as of yet, with a few of the devices on trial in the UK somewhere as we speak.

Stuff.tv have a video available demonstrating the POP in action.
