LaCie Offers Different Types of Computer Cables in a Flat Design

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

LaCie is an electronic components manufacturer that always takes into account the design and all of its gadgets feature unique looks and style, that’s why its products are some of my favorites.

I a sure you agree with me when I say that wireless connectivity is the best solution when you need to interconnect various systems for creating an efficient network, but from what I experienced, wireless gadgets available today are not very reliable yet, as the technology is not advanced enough, or, let’s say that you could find what you need but at high costs. Well, if we have to stick on wires, then let me suggest you LaCie’s offer – colored and flat cables. These not only provide high-quality connectivity, but also look good inside your home or office. Coming in blue, yellow and orange, you have three color options to choose from and match your network.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
LaCie Flat Cables are for different types of connectivities such as USB A to B, USB A to Mini B, USB A male to A female, FireWire 400 to FireWire 400, FireWire 400 to FireWire 800, FireWire 800 to FireWire 800, and eSATA to eSATA. This means you can use them for connecting your desktop or laptop computer to external storage devices, CD/DVD burners, printers, digital cameras, and even cell phones and media players.

This flat shape allows you to roll them for easy carrying inside your bag, and apply one of the 24 included adhesive labels so you’ll always distinguish between connectivity types.
For a package containing seven different cables each measuring 1.2m in length, with 24 adhesive labels, you’d have to spend only $9.99.

Christmas bleak for Zimbabweans fleeing collapse

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

The last Sunday before Christmas was celebrated with a carol service in a downtown Johannesburg church that has become a haven for hundreds of Zimbabweans who have fled their nation’s collapse.

While songs in her native Shona and other southern African languages were being sung in the main chapel of the Central Methodist Church, Takelah Chakamza sat nearby in a crowed room that doubles as a kitchen by day and women’s sleeping quarters by night, reviewing a bleak Christmas shopping list.

Cooking oil. Corn meal. Soap. Chakamza’s family in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, had sent the list that morning by mobile phone text message. Chakamza, who earns 800 rand (about $80) a month cooking for a Johannesburg family, would buy the groceries and send them by bus, to be collected at the main Harare bus station. She had no extra money for presents for her mother, father, four sisters and brothers, daughter and four nieces and nephews back home.

iPhone 3G Unlock Demo Video released

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

The iPhone Dev Team has just post the iPhone 3G unlock demo video on their blog for public viewing, and based on what we can see so far, it looks to be quite a promising little crack.

It’s not actually the final product just yet as the one shown off in the video had to be run manually through terminal. It’s currently codenamed yellowsnow , and it managed to unlock the AT&T iPhone in just a matter of seconds.

Provided that the final product is as fast, hassle-free and effective as the one demoed, then the iPhone Dev Team definitely has another sure hit on their hands with this one.

Flash for iPhone now (sort of) Available via iMobileCinema

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

Even though this isn’t exactly what we were hoping for when we heard Flash support was indeed headed for the iPhone, this is probably as good as it gets if you want to access Flash-based features in websites.

iMobileCinema
is an app made for jailbroken iPhone versions 2.x that enables Safari to load Flash content such as YouTube videos embedded in websites. It’s not perfect by any stretch and won’t even work with certain sites, but if you’ve been longing for Flash-support for the iPhone for the longest time, this is the best (if not only) solution for you at the moment. Maybe with this app will force Apple to work double-time in releasing Flash-support for the iPhone as I reckon that this is good enough a reason for people to go back to their jailbreaking ways.

So, where can you get it? Once you’ve already jailbroken your iPhone, just add d.mobilecinema to your sources in Cydia and then install iMobileCineam. It’s that simple! If ever you do get to try this out, give us a holler at the comments section below. We’d love to hear your take on it.

RIM scores Bitter Sweet Victory with BlackBerry Storm, Bold

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

The popularity and high demand for the BlackBerry Storm may seem like a sure indication that things are going well at RIM headquarters, but it seems that it brings both good and bad news to the company.

Thanks to both the Storm and Bold, RIM has managed to increase their user base by a whopping 75% and have more people lined up to get these BlackBerry beauties, but now they’re having problems keeping up with the demand and it has come at a costly price. Trying to stay in step with industry leaders such as Nokia and Samsung, RIM has had to lower the price of their handsets which in turn took a toll on the company’s profits despite revenue improving by 66% to $2.78-billion this year as compared to the $1.67-billion a year ago.

They’re optimistic, however, that if the demand continues and they manage to get the Storm and Bold manufactured at a lower cost, profits will eventually return to status quo.

While this latest news may be a bitter sweet pill to swallow for RIM and its investors, it’s good to know from a consumer’s standpoint that they aren’t fixated on just making huge earnings, and they’re actually amicable to adjusting the price of their handsets so as to remain competitive in the current market.

Samsung to unleash own Android phone in Q2 2009

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

We’ve seen and heard about a couple of Android phones for countries outside of the US, but now, Samsung has just made known their plans for their own Android-based phone in the US.

The second quarter of 2009 will be the launch period for both a Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile Android offering. Word is that the phone will inherit most of the design features of the Omnia and Instict (read: full touchscreen with minimal physical buttons), but we’re hoping that they consider adding a QWERTY-keypad into the mix. That’s it for now, but considering that 2009 is less than two weeks away, we’ll probably get some more juicy info about this Samsung Android phone in the early part of the next year.

BlackBerry Media Sync v1.1.0.24 supports Album Art, 64-bit Windows Vista

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

RIM has just updated their BlackBerry Media Sync app which now supports iTunes album art and is compatible with 64-bit Windows Vista PCs.

Even though a full running version is yet to become available for the Mac, there is a preview version available to try out. They have a small reminder, though, for those who are curious enough to give this a go: installing the Preview version will in effect no longer make previously installed apps that sync data between your BlackBerry device and Mac connect to your phone. You have to uninstall the BlackBerry Media Sync preview to make them work again.

So, if you’re using Windows, use iTunes to organize all your music files on your PC and love loading your BlackBerry phone with mp3 files, we see no reason why you shouldn’t upgrade or download BlackBerry Media Sync version 1.1.0.24 now.

Improved Motorola Krave ZN4 gets renamed MotoPrizm in Korea

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

The US may have been the first to get the Motorola Krave ZN4 out the door, but it seems that Korea will be getting the better version of it.

SK Telecom will be the one offering this touchscreen beauty in Korea as the MotoPrizm. This new iteration of the Krave ZN4 comes with a better 840×480 display and a 3-megapixel camera that easily beats a US version that only features a 400×240 display and a 2-megapixel camera. All of the other features remain more or less the same.

If you want get a MotoPrizm simply because it’s better than Verizon’s Krave ZN4, you will have to head on over to Korea as there’s no indication that it will be released elsewhere.

Best Buy Mobile puts iPhone 3G on Sale for $189.99, $289.99

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

Walmart may soon be selling the iPhone 3G at $2 lower than its standard retail price, but Best Buy Mobile will be offering it at an even lower price of $189.99 for the 8GB variant and $289.99 for the 16GB version.

That’s roughly $9 in savings if you get it during the promo period which starts today and will run until January 3rd, 2009. You do, however, need to sign-up for a 2-yr contract with AT&T, but as an added incentive, they’ll also throw in free email set-up worth $29.99 and double the reward zone points ($10 for the 8GB, $15 for the 16GB).

Early qualified customers who just want to upgrade to the latest version of the iPhone can get a 8GB model for $399.99 while the 16GB will cost them $499.99. So, is this a sweet enough a deal for you or are you still waiting for a better bargain?

Samsung BlackJack II takes top spot in Consumer Reports’ smartphone showdown

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

If you thought that the Samsung BlackJack II, otherwise known as the Jack in Canada, was past its prime thanks to the iPhone 3G, you’d be sorely mistaken.

Based on the January 2009 issue of Consumer Reports, the Samsung BlackJack II managed to best out both the iPhone and Android-based T-Mobile G1 to take the #1 spot in the smartphone category. Actually, the two popular phones didn’t even make it to the top 5. The T-Mobile Wing, Motorola Q9C, T-Mobile Shadow, and BlackBerry Pearl Flip close out the elite 5 with the iPhone and T-Mobile G1 both tied at 6th place.

However, just to be fair, it should be noted that the BlackBerry Bold, Storm, Samsung OMNIA, and all of the HTC Touch Pro variants were apparently not included in the survey which could have yielded a different set of results. Nevertheless, I personally think that the BlackJack II is still a deserving winner.

I guess this just goes to show that the right balance between form, function and price can beat the combination of beauty and hype. How about you guys? Which smartphone is currently your #1 choice?

More 2009 Motorola Phones Get Previewed

December 22, 2008

(0) Comments

According to a new set of images that arrived on the doorstep of Boy Genius, Motorola’s got more in store for us in 2009.

The one you’re looking at above is called the Niagra. If you’re guessing that its an updated version of the RAZR, you’re not alone though we’ll probably have to wait several more months to get confirmation if this is indeed the new look for their now classic line of phones.

The next two are a bit more traditional in design. The Fairbanks is the one on the left, while the one on the right is known as the Harmony.

Like the other four we reported earlier, these phones will debut on Verizon on a yet to be disclosed date. So, now that you’ve gotten a preview of what Motorola has to offer in 2009, which one strikes your fancy the most?
