iTunes goes DRM-free, 3G OTA Downloads for the iPhone Announced
Macworld 2009 has ended and one of the major announcements made as far as iPhone users are concerned it that iTunes will now support 3G over-the-air music downloads and purchases.
Likewise, iTunes will also be going DRM-free which means that whatever you download through Apple’s online music store will now be compatible with other devices as well. An initial 8 million songs at 256kbps are scheduled to get DRM-free treatment with 2 million more to follow at the end of the quarter. Eventually, the entire iTunes Store catalog will be set free, but that will obviously take some time. Beginning in April, these new DRM-free items will be available at the following price points: 69 cents, 99 cents, and $1.29 depending on the music label.
Those who want to upgrade their current collection to the DRM-free standard can click here and get it done for 30 cents per song or 30% of the album price. Considering that this has just been announced, it may take sometime for this new service to go live especially if you’re residing outside the US. However, we do expect it to at least become available in majority of the countries across the globe before the first half of 2009 comes to a close.
