PlayStation 3 and MTV and Free Music

The PlayStation 3. Touted as a media centre, multifunctional, super device. Yet we Europeans don’t even have a digital video store yet and no territory has access to digital music shops.

Well hopefully some of that is going to changes and the other bits slightly improve. I’ll start by announcing news that is good to some but “meh” to many others. Sony has officially announced a partnership with MTV and their associated networks, including Comedy Central. The downside is this will probably still be limited to the US region so good for them, bad for everyone else as per usual.

So what about the rest of us you say? Well there is some good news. The European regions (and probably still the US) will be getting full support and access to VidZone, a music video streaming service. This allows PS3 users to stream music videos. It does get a bit better as well; if you are in-game then you can still stream the music, sans video playback of course. Presumably this is with games that support in-game XMB, though to be fair, this is pretty much every game released now.

Unfortunately there has been no update on the European (and other regions) receiving video store support, but this was announced at a US-based electronics show, so hopefully we might hear something soon. Especially as it was last announced we would get the service in early 2009.
