Hewlett-Packard Co, the world′s top PC maker, is launching a new line of inexpensive business laptops with fresh features targeting users at small and medium-size companies.
At the price of $600 the new Toshiba’s release Satellite - proves to be a notebook that worth its money especially for those who need to surf the Web, to run Microsoft Office, watch widescreen movies or listen to the music.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The design is following the Toshiba style with a keyboard deck sport that is colored in the grey Breeze style, with a glossy lid that hides somehow the fingerprints due to the neutral color. The unit is sizing 15.1×10.2×1,6 inches and weights 6 pounds, not exactly easy to be carried while traveling but not such a big problem anyway. The keyboard presents its keys with a little bit of flexibility but there isn’t the feeling of being crammed even if the screen is 15.6” wide there is still room for full number pad located on the right side of the base. With a rough surface the touchpad felt very easy to work with presenting no friction while moving the finger across it.
The screen as mentioned is 15.6” wide with a suitable brightness and a 1366 x 768 resolution that makes it appropriate for its size, but in order to get good viewing angles you have to tilt back the display further than you normally do, otherwise you get a washed out image on the screen. The speakers play loud enough yet are lacking the bass line.
On the right side of the unit we find 2 USB ports, modem, a Kensington lock slot and on the left a VGA out, Ethernet, headphone and microphone, and an eSATA port that doubles a USB. The webcam is a 1.3 megapixel one and has a little motion blur while you make a move being two feet away from the webcam. The system is equipped with 2.0-GHz Intel Premium processor scoring 2,791 in PCMark Vantage which is 400 points below the category average but with 100 points above the Dell Inspiron 15 score which has the same processor and amount of RAM – 3GB.
The graphics presents itself below the mainstream notebook category average, but when performing less graphically demanding activities it did well enough. The 6-cell battery on Toshiba Satellite L505 lasted 2 hours and 14 minutes, not such a long life compared to that of Dell Inspiron 15, which is one hour longer. The eco utility is accessed through the Power Options menu enabling the display to diminish and turn off the hard disk after 5 minutes of inactivity.
Software comes with an amount of trialware that includes 30 days for Norton Internet Security 2009, 60 days for Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. For the L500 series, Toshiba offers various configurations such as AMD Athlon Ͳ QL-65 CPU, 3GB of RAM, a 250GB, 5,400-rpm hard drive for the base model L505D-S5965 and 2.1-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 5,400 rpm, 320GB hard drive, and 802.11n Wi-Fi for L505-S6959 model.
Toshiba Satellite L505- meets the users’ basic demands and paying $549 seems to be quite a deal considering its stylish design and its large hard drive of 320GB, so don’t hesitate to consider it among your options when you are out there in purchase of a good notebook.
Toshiba’s new release has come with five configurations: the £300 NB200-10G, the £325 NB200-11L, and the £350 NB200-11H, NB200-10Z (reviewed here) and NB200-110. In the following we try to see if it lifts itself up to the expectations of such a price.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
Considering firstly the design we can describe it as being much better looking than its predecessor N with its slim line, only 25mm thickness with a copper-colored finish on the lid, the inside being stylish in presenting a silver keyboard and wrist rest. The keys of the keyboard are calculator-style, but either way they feel quite responsive while typing as well, since they are distanced in a reasonable way enough to convey a comfort in typing. The screen presents a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution with the graphics and text looking very crispy. Its brightness renders the images and videos a vividness hardly to believe for a screen that has a reflection-prone glossy coating.
We find the connection for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, a VGA port for hooking it up to a flat-screen TV or a monitor, three USB ports, located one on the left side that can be set through software in order to stay powered on while the netbook is asleep or turned off. This feature is an excellent one, since it allows you to charge devices the same way you do for MP3 players or mobile phones. NB 200 10Z is running Windows XP, being equipped with 1GB of RAM and a hard drive of 160GB storage. Through its sensor that can detect a falling of your netbook , the drive ensures a protection of your data parking the drive heads.
As to its performance, the device uses Intel Atom N280 processor that moves a little bit faster than the Atom N270 CPU which is considered the staple of several best-performing netbooks. While using NB200 one can notice its way to handle different tasks such as displaying a video taken from BBC’s iPlayer service. On the benchmark tests, the 3D performance didn’t end up well scoring only 92 in 3DMark 06, which is not that bad, but it could have been better considering the achievement that has to be reached in the latest 3D shooters.
Battery life is not poor at all, the NB200 10Z was running for a time that lasted 5 hrs and 12 minutes in the Classic test of intensive Battery Eater. If one uses it on regular basis, the life of the battery can last longer considering that Toshiba delivered a control panel with a totally comprehensive management of power ability. As a closing result for the Toshiba’s netbook NB200 10Z test, we can say that with so much competition out there on the market, it is quite a challenge for manufacturers to come up with something to stand out in the front line, but altogether it has proved to be netbook that is worth being recommended.
The HP ProBook 4710s is a 17” business notebook came in a pre-production review configured with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz Processor (3MB L2 cache, 1066MHz FSB), using Microsoft Genuine Windows Vista Business (32-bit). It has a display of 1600×900, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 512MB, 4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM, 320GB 5400RPM HDD, LightScribe DVD+/-RW Optical Drive, Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/draft-n), Ethernet, Modem, Bluetooth 2.0, 8-Cell 63WHr Battery.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
These are the data of HP ProBook 4710s configuration let’s see if it presents itself as a good alternative for another notebook, considering that its starting price is $899.00. its design is created especially for small and medium businesses, meaning that it needs to be even regarding the performance, reliability and security, all these at an affordable price. For lowering the cost of production and thus the cost to consumers, HP ProBook 4710s is built mostly of plastic, hoping that it will not have to stand for rugged workhorse. The lid is also made out of reflective, glossy plastic, the screen being a combination of firm and flexible materials. But next to its flexibility the 4710s presents a hard drive protection helping you to protect it in case it gets dropped or bumped.
As to its features and ports, we meet on left side of the case the Kensington Lock slot, GigE Ethernet, heat exhaust, VGA out, HDMI, an ExpressCard/34 slot and two USB ports. On the right side there are two USB ports, modem, optical drive and power jack, the rear side with its battery and hinges and for the front side media card reader, headphone out and microphone in jacks.
The 16:9 widescreen ratio presents a display of 1600×900 pixels with high definition, nice colors, good contrast and a great sense of real. The horizontal viewing angles are good presenting a color shift only when you exceed 75 degrees off center, whereas the vertical ones present a color’s invert after 45 degrees in any direction. The speakers are only to render a good system sound for watching a webcast, but turned on higher volume levels it presents a distorted sound.
The keyboard presents an extra spacing between the individual keys which are flat and have a matte texture located above a glossy black frame. The touchpad is responsive having a scroll zone on the right side that works properly, with its buttons a little about the right size that make your thumb hit the bottom edge of the notebook.
The performance rendered by ATI Radeon 4330 GPU with 512MB of dedicated memory delivers enough power to watch HD content, to edit video, but doesn’t lift up to handle complex 3D rendering jobs like other graphics present in other notebooks. As to the heating and noise the ProBook 4710s remains quite cool but makes a sound while being plugged in and this happens because of the cooling fan that has to work harder. The battery life while testing at “HP Optimized” mode, with wireless active and 70% screen brightness, lasted for 3 hrs and 35 minutes, but the battery life can be extended if you lower the screen brightness and use the “power saver” from Windows Vista’s profile. The HP ProBook 4710s at a reasonable price proves to be of an interest for medium business buyers, as it presents a good balance between processors, graphics and high-resolution screen.
While interviewed Ian Moulster, Senior Product Manager for Microsoft UK, has given details about what developers need to know on IE8 which through its launching generated confusion and controversy. Once developed, a site will render fine in IE8 for after that all the standards-compliant websites to be rendered correctly. When it comes to compatibility view list there are some aspects that need underlined: IE8 has two modes – Standards Mode and IE7 mode that is also known as Compatibility Mode that enables all the users who subscribe to the list to access the site that had previously some issues with Standards Mode. The utility lays in that they can keep it on the list for making further amendments to their site.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
In case a user doesn’t want to be on the list any more, then he may send an email with his request, as long as the list is public, there won’t be any problem to see who is on it. The list comprises 3,000 sites worldwide that are defined to be high traffic and mission critical as well, for instance when an important public site is operated in view of some public interests, then it wouldn’t be a pleasure to see that this site fails on you.
It may occur that the number of sites to grow, but developers are interested in getting these sites off the Compatibility List since the compatibility button usage is reported to operate quite low compared to what they were expected. The route to get on the list goes like that: the users who want to be enlisted are viewed on the Compatibility View button, than their site is taken into account if it’s worth putting the user on the list or not. Then an email follow letting you know that your site was admitted.
In case the site is not rendered correctly, there is a Refresh button next to Compatibility button, this option giving you the possibility to rearrange your site. This works with a broken page icon over which the user hovers and then little bubble appears this meaning exactly what is it for. IE8 comes as a copy with a comprehensive developer mode; user is able to access it by simply pressing F12 any time he wants. And then open a lot of possibilities that materialize in changing the application used as the source viewer, one can turn off images or in case he desires he may receive reports on images, it is also possible to validate things like links and HTML, CSS, visualize the page in IE1 mode etc.
There is the option to see and amend the CSS and HTML obtaining the page in order to be re-rendered, letting the user in this way to notice his changes, not to mention that one can set breakpoints in scripts, inspect and set watch variables, view the call stack and so on. The fact is that IE8 comes with a Compatibility Mode with the purpose to find and resolve issues otherwise not possible to be solved, in this way ensuring you of the fact that you can read all websites that do not match the new standards.
With the release of Sony’s Vaio P series earlier this year, customers were taken by surprise with the so-called premium price-tag and the slow boot-up of the device presented by the critics. But meanwhile the Japanese company has revealed that they plan to release late this autumn another version of ultraportable computer Vaio P that’s called “mark 2”. No details are currently available beside the fact that it will present a faster boot-up time, but a review of Sony’s first proper netbook, the Vaio W was made in order to have some knowledge on the new products series of the Japanese computing company, so we are entitled to say that Sony’s Vaio W is preparing the ground for Vaio P ‘mark 2′ to be released in October.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
Sony Vaio W is the first attempt of Sony’s company in creating netbooks, though Sony avoids calling it netbook, referring better to it as being a “chic mini notebook”. Form all that is known there are also the specifications that reveal Vaio W a netbook, through that that contains an Intel Atom Processor N280 (1.66GHz), 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, webcam Motion Eye, a couple of USB ports and the rest.
The company’s product is aiming toward the users that have always ‘aspired’ to get one of the tempting Vaio before, although the price is not what one could call to reach the budget-netbook level, but again this is not the case with Sony’s products. The Sony Vaio W is set to be launched later on the market at a price of $399.00 and there must be reasons to reveal the necessity of paying $100.00 more than in the case of other netbooks.
One of the reasons could be the keyboard which as minor as it seems makes a lot of difference in that it presents a legerity that your fingers have while typing without being stressed of the possibility to bash the neighboring keys. Another reason would be the 10.1” high resolution screen (1366 x 768) that resembles the one belonging to the 40” high definition TVs. This is quite amazing and turns the Vaio W into one of the best netbooks in this matter. Even if it offers light chances to watch a movie on an Atom processor having only 1GB of Ram, there is still th4e option to upgrade it to 2GB of Ram. But when it comes to everyday use, such as browsing the internet, it presents the advantage that one doesn’t need to scroll on the sides in oreder to be able to view the whole website.
The device is powered by a battery to hold three hours but it is an extra option offered by Sony in that one can get a 6 cell battery to prolong its life up to six or seven hours. Some other paid accessories are present, such as wetsuit-style bag and a colored mouse that raise the costs to $440.00. As closing information, the netbooks are coming in a nice shade of pink, too in case one might want to buy the device for his missus. All in one Vaio W is to be released for purchasing in the mid of August, so in case you look for a tiny chic “notebook”, as Sony calls it, you can be sure to satisfy your needs related to this kind of product.
The performances of Dell’s Inspiron 15” show it to be a notebook close to most of all-purpose laptops available on the market. The design even if it’s basic presents on the inside components having a glossy piano-black touch, whereas the keyboard has a matte feel displayed on a large width with its silent keys cozy while typing. The touchpad measures 1.8 x 3.0 inches and is as matte as the keyboard.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The device is equipped with evenly distributed on its two sides 3 USB 3.0 ports, VGA out, Ethernet, headphone and microphone ports, an Express Card/34 slot, and 7-in-1 memory card reader. But unfortunately no HDMI port is present and neither a webcam.
The display is 16:9 large, a 1366 x 768 resolution, with extra pixels that enable it for multitasking, watching movies, but no LED-backlit option. The speaker strip is loud enough that at median setting presents a quite good volume, no needing to play louder.
As to its performance Dell Inspiron 15” is available with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, configured with a 2.0-GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU. The 3GB of RAM capacity booted the Windows Vista in 47 seconds. For transferring files it proves a rate of 18.8 MBps which is ranged among the average for the notebooks of this size. Transcoding a 5:05 MPEG-4 clip to AVI lasts 9 minutes and 8 seconds, that makes four minutes slower than the average notebook, but much faster than the netbook average, which is 29:10.
Dell Inspiron 15” has a graphics of Intel GMA X4500HD, that scored 767 on 3DMark06 on the graphics benchmark. The graphics for games however is rendered by only 5 frames per second, even if the resolution is set for its maximum. But this is not a reason not to be used in everyday computing.
The device is powered by 6-cell battery that lasts 3 hours and 12 minutes, showing it to be in the average range of its category. Dell Inspiron 15” comes with Dell Dock for launching programs which is composed of simple colorful icons when activated open a submenu of tasks. Next follow the DataSafe Online and DataSafe Local Backup which enables users to create disks to recover and restore the notebook for its factory settings.
The software already preinstalled displays a McAfee Security Center, Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, Compatibility Pack and PowerPoint 2007, PowerDVD DX, Roxio Creator DE, Windows Life Essentials and Yahoo Toolbar. To set a configuration, the device can reach it at Dell.com, where base configuration incorporates Windows Vista Basic. To upgrade for Vista Home Premium (32bit or 64bit), users have to pay an extra $30.00.
Hard drive sizes go from 160GB to 500GB at a price of $125; upgrading to ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics with dedicated video memory of 256MB, requires a $100 extra cost.
As a conclusion, since Dell Inspiron 15” got tested, we can say that Inspiron 15” presents itself as a notebook worth buying for the ones that are on budget and they need light computing to perform on.
The ad regarding the Comapq Mini 1040DX netbook sounds very promising so long as you activate it with Verizon and AT&T services for a $199.99 price to be paid on a 2 years contract terms, or even better for only $0.99 a 2 years contract service with Sprint, otherwise it will cost you $389.99 on a non-contract basis.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The Comapq Mini 1040DX is a readapted mark of HP mini netbook that presents the following characteristics: it is equipped with 1.60GHz Intel Atom Processor N270, and a 512KB L2 cache one, a system memory of 1024MB DDR2 and video graphics of Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, with its memory up to 128MB. The hard drive presents a 16GB Solid State Drive Flash Module, 5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, Multimedia cards, memory stick ports; as to network card there is an integrated 10/100 Ethernet LAN, a wireless connectivity for HP un2499 Mobile Broadband at 802.11b/g WLAN.
Its 10.1” SD LED display presents an Anti-glare Widescreen of 1024×576, facing a keyboard that occupies 92% of the size of the front board. The touchpad has a vertical Scroll Up/Down without on/off button. Other ports available: 3 Universal Serial Bus USB 2.0, headphones out/Microphone in combo jack, a port for 1 VGA of 15-pin and 1 RJ-45 LAN. The netbook is equipped with a HP webcam that incorporates integrated microhone, a security lock slot, power-on password and it is powered by 3 Cell Lithium-Ion Battery with a 30W AC Adapter.
The software system is supported by Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009, Syncables Mobile Desktop 5, Back on Track Recovery. The multimedia provided by the software system includes Adobe Reader, eBay, HP Document Viewer, Windows Media Player 11, Adobe Flash Player, HP Games Powered by Wild Tangent and Pandora Internet Radio. As solutions for internet access we find: AOL, AOL AIM, SKype, MSN Toolbar and Internet Explorer 7.
Returning to the ad, we can say that Sprint has made a smart move with its $0.99 2 years contract terms; considering that all three of these carriers (Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint) have invested lots of money in their networks, one may think of a solution to find customers in order to have a profit. And Sprint, as shown, has done it, especially that on a 3G test, it proved to me the most reliable network. The question is: why the other two – Verizon and AT&T – are still advertising with their $199.99 price for 2 years service contract as long as the service per month costs $60.00 and it will be over in three months already? Maybe they should consider following Sprint deal in order to gain more customers and thus reimbursing the money invested in their networks.
Last days, David Hall, the product manager of Symantec Asia-Pacific Consumer Products and Solutions, has declared in an interview that the free versions of antivirus software (one of which being Microsoft’s Microsoft Security Essentials) do not lift up to the full-price suites offered by Symantec. The offer presented by Microsoft through Microsoft Security Essentials currently in Beta is seen by Hall as a solution that doesn’t complete the protection a user needs in order to keep him away form identity theft. He also described the Microsoft’s new free product as a remake of an old Microsoft’s OneCare product.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
Next he said that a lot of people are not aware of the difference that lays between the necessity of a protection and the threats they are dealing with. It is known that the attackers target legitimate higher trafficked websites, offering an increased payload that corresponds to the number of users that allow to be compromised. The way that one user can get easily infected is by accessing a website one knows to be good, as long as you stay away from the adult entertainment sites.
Halls sees the antivirus as a last security technology to be relied on when it comes to protection so long as you already got the virus and the machine is already infested. The target of a protection should be defined before the threat ever gets into the machine, something with a prophylactic effect of an active technology. The threat is extending also in the drive by downloads with so many vulnerable plug-ins existing in the machine, such as: Flash, RealPlayer, Quick Time. Having free antivirus software doesn’t guarantee you the fact that you will be able to make update against this chain of vulnerabilities, since the origin of the route is already infested, one being able to activate the antivirus only long after the damage is done. That’s why the use of an in-depth layered technology is necessary; this could be done through mature paid suites that are able to detect more virus than had ever been detected in the last 10 years.
But it seems that Hall omits the point that AVF Free was more useful over the years, so what can be the use of buying Norton products as long as the free antivirus versions are satisfactory enough for most of the users? For instance NAV – the Norton’s Antivirus system which came for some users already installed and they declared that the only thing known to be done by using it was bogging down the laptop, whereas downloading the AVG Free kept the system free from viruses. Even now, after so many years of using AVG Free, the system never proved to fail users expectations. So, with all the Norton’s ads on popular sites boasting with its speedy internet protection suite, some of the users are still loyal to the free updating protection provided by free versions of antivirus software available, this leading us to an obvious question: why pay money for something when you can get it for free?
After installing Windows 7 RC, downloading all the available drivers and updates and reinstalling the core apps and in case you need to have better performance or simply customize an aspect of the new OS, then the 12 free tools are the perfect ones to do the job.
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
The “EnhanceMySe7en Free” tool enables you to bring together all the system tools and the ones for adjustments that you might need. This tool is split into five sections, every section containing more subsections that provide performance adjustments, system health tools and almost everything that you need in-between.
The “Standalone Stack” tool allows you to create a desktop shortcut that displays a tiled stack of the items inside the folder, fixing the shortcut to the Taskbar making it available to be used from there at the same time keeping the original desktop clear and tidy.
The “LogonStudio Vista” tool is changing the screen when you log on to Windows. In order for Vista version of LogonStudio to function properly in Windows 7 and to be able to download designs from web, you must apply compatibility setting for Windows Server 2003. – Service Pack 1.
The “SysInternals Suite” tool proves an essential download in that it contains Process Explorer that allows you to investigate running process in accurate detail, AutoRuns enables you to manage and optimize your start up, and lastly TCPView lets you see what network and internet connections have been established by the processes that run on the PC.
The “Notepad++” replaces the Notepad in Windows 7, giving support for a vast range of programming languages over other free editors. “Fast Copy” makes the maximum use of the PC’s resources. The “SmartDefrag” tool stays unnoticeable in the background to prevent fragmentation and helps keeping the hard drive to run quickly.
The “Revo Uninstaller” tool once installed allows you to take control of the uninstall process, finding files, folders and entries on Registry feature that the uninstaller missed. The “Mediacoder” tool helps you convert the codec into a compatible format handling easy music and video. The “Macrium Reflect Free” fills the gap that Home version leaves when upon its installing make some features disappear. This hole is filled neatly, Macrium offering extra features that you don’t find in Window’s own tool.
The “HD Sentinel” tool enables a more accurate way to monitor the drive’s physical health and attached drives. The “Process Assassin” tool runs a quick and easy “assassination” of the programs and processes that fail while experimenting with Windows 7. These 12 hot and free applications make the most of the new OS of your Windows 7 RC.
The Nokia’s latest flagship model N97 is on the market long enough for us to draw some lines related to its features. First of all let’s pay attention to what it has to offer with the box that comes wrapped in: a phone case, a battery (BP-4L 1500mAh, charger and adapter, USB data cable, a kit of earphone-remote handsfree, Nokia Ovi Suite installer, warranty documents, and user’s manual, wipe cloth, and a detachable stylus).
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
After getting the unit out of its box you find the display covered with a sticker that has the “ovi.store.com” ad on it and you have to pay attention while removing as it is possible to take out the whole film that covers for protection the faceplate of the N97. It is only the Ovi sticker thing that you have to remove, not the whole protection film, so be careful! This model do not present a microSD memory card as the built-in 32GB memory proves to be enough for those who need more space they can use the microSD slot and add up to 8GB of capacity on it.
The case is very tight, one has to put himself through a lot of trials to find an easy way to open it; after a while one can realize that actually pushing the bottom of the case will force the unit to go out. Maybe a higher-quality case would be better to consider. As to the cables it would have been preferred the standard 4-pin USB port instead of including the USB data cable which is more standard for a high-end phone.
The Nokia Ovi and Ovi store features are introduced to the user via a special booklet that is unfortunately more targeted to marketing than to the user’s guiding. Nokia included also a detachable stylus to be used in precision typing and handwriting, but it seems that is quite useless so long as the keyboard works pretty well. A thing that at first sight might seem minor is the presence of the wipe cloth. The surface of the N97 gets easily greasy and filled with fingerprints, and the wipe cloth looks a useful thing when it comes to keeping your unit tidy and shiny.
What has Nokis omitted with its new ộ is including it into Comes With Music program, but considering the fact that a customer that purchase the flagship model is counted to be among the multitude of Nokia fans, then why not pay his loyalty with this kind of reward? But anyway, the presence of USB data cable, charger adapter, the built-in capacity of 32GB memory is enough to show that you do not need to buy new accessories to get a maximum out of N97. Nokia N97 pretty has all what it needs to satisfy the users of this kind of device.
