HP Mini 2140 Notebook

February 10, 2010

The HP Mini 2140 notebook is a new mini notebook from HP which is a replacement and an update for the original HP 2133 Mini-Note. The HP Mini 2140 notebook is a business class notebook and it comes with a magnesium and aluminum alloy case.

<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->

The HP Mini 2140 notebook has a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1 GB of DD̶ RAM memory and a 160 GB hard drive. This combination of power and storage capacity makes this notebook a real competitor for many other notebooks from the same category. The 10.1 inch display with a native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels allows you to watch movies without connecting an external monitor to it.

The glossy and bright display is very attractive but this can be a problem because it reflects the object in front of it when you use it outdoors or into a powerfully lit room. And just like other glossy surfaces, this is a magnet for fingerprints and dust so you must clean it every time you use it.

The keyboard on the HP Mini 2140 notebook is full-sized with flat and large keys so you can type on them without problems. Like the other models of HP notebooks, the keys offer a positive feedback. There can be only one problem. On the keyboard you will see only one “Fn” taste which is very important for a laptop. But thanks to the space between keys you can easy type on the correct keys.

The touchpad is quite small but it is very sensitive and will respond even to the weakest touch. The smooth surface of the touchpad offers a pleasant sensation when you touch it. There is but one single problem: it doesn’t support multi-touch. If you want to scroll a page you have a strip on the right side of the touchpad.

The integrated speakers on the HP Mini 2140 notebook are loud and clear so you don’t need to plug in an external speakers set. The integrated microphone is very receptive and the integrated 1.2 Megapixels webcam allows you to make video calls and stay in touch with your friends, even to take photos or record clips. The 3-cell battery will keep this notebook up for 2 hours and 12 minutes on stressful test conditions. The battery performance is not that bad but for an ultraportable we expected to see more.

If you are concerned with connectivity, this model comes with only 2 USB ports, a VGA out port, an Ethernet port, a 56k modem port, a Bluetooth adaptor and the usual headphones and microphone jacks – quite impressive considering the size of the unit. The Wireless and the Bluetooth adaptors will help you stay in touch with your friends anywhere you are.

The HP Mini 2140 notebook comes with 60 days trial of Microsoft Office and McAfee Total Protection pre-installed. The Desktop zoom feature is very useful on this kind of notebook because it helps you adjust the icons and font sizes so you can read without problems. The price of this notebook is $499. Even if the HP Mini 2140 isn’t the cheapest notebook, we recommend you buy this model because it is definitely worth the money.

Alienware M9700

February 10, 2010

(0) Comments

The Alienware Company is recognized by its gaming laptops and desktops PCs. The Alienware M9700 is another serious gaming laptop with great performance and solid built in quality. This model is the first of its kind which uses the NVIDIA SLI technology. Using two GeForce 7900GS graphics cards and an AMD Turion64 2.40 GHz processor you can use this laptop to play any game you want without problems.

<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->

The 1 GB of DD𔇠 RAM memory and the two hard drives with a total capacity of 200 GB allow you to run any application without any lag and store your files in a safe place. With such a performance you will be envied by the greatest gamers in the world.

The Alienware 򾖴 has a 17 inch Wide Screen WUXGA display with a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 which offers clear and quality images. Even if the display is a quite glossy the ClearView technology helps you get the best quality for the on-screen images and movies even if you plan to use this laptop into a powerfully lit room. Like the other Alienware laptops, this hosts many connection possibilities.

It has an Integrated Gigabit Ethernet port, an integrated 56K modem port, 4 USB ports, a 4-in-1 Media Card Reader, a VGA port, an S-Video port, a WireFire, a Realtek 802.11 g/s Wireless adaptor, Bluetooth adaptor, an Express Card Slot, a S/PDIF output, 10/100/1000 LAN port, a DVI port, a PCMCIA slot and the indispensable headphone and microphone jacks.

The case is made of synthetic material with a pleasant combination of gray and glossy black. The lid is an artwork just like the other lids on other Alienware laptop models. The alien head which is a symbol for this company and the engraved lines are present on the lid. The Alienware M9700 keyboard is a full-size one and it is very easy to use when you play games. The keys are made of plastic material and offer a positive feedback when you press them.

The touchpad is quite small but this is not a problem because probably you will use a mouse with such a gaming laptop. Anyway, the touchpad is very responsive and it will react to every touch no matter how weak it is. But as I said, we recommend using a mouse for this laptop because you will be more satisfied and you will get better response (not to mention better shooting accuracy). If you want a good mouse, we recommend you to buy The Logitech G5 Laser Gaming Mouse for only $66.

The Alienware M9700 comes with an optical DVD-RW drive and the LightScribe feature so you can make personalized labels for your CDs of DVDs. The internal speakers and subwoofer offer an amazing sound with enough bass so you don’t need to attach other external stereo speakers. The 5.1 audio support is a rare feature for a laptop as it offers the sound quality to make any laptop owner proud.

The 12-cell Lithium-Ion battery will keep this laptop up for 1hr – 1hr 30min under test conditions. That is pretty much for a gaming laptop with these performances. The total weight is 11 pounds so if you want to carry this laptop with you all the time you will get tired very quickly. But since we are talking about a gaming laptop and a desktop replacement at the same time, this aspect may not matter that much. This laptop which has this specific configuration costs $3,700 but if you don’t want to spend such a lot of money you can choose the standard configuration which costs $1,700 but the performance will not be the same.

HP 6735s Laptop

February 10, 2010

(0) Comments

Another business mainstream notebook made by HP company is the HP 6735s laptop. This model has a synthetic material case which can be a problem because it is difficult to clean. The colors used on this laptop are black and semi-matte which offer an excellent business aspect. Other important aspects of this laptop are the weight and dimensions. With only 2.72 kg in weight and 3.2 x 35.8 x 26.7 cm dimensions, this laptop has the elegant and serious look of a business unit.

<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->

The HP 6735s laptop is available with a standard AMD Turion X2 RM-72 CPU processor (2.1 GHz/ FSB 3600 MHz/ 2x 512 kb L2 cache/ 35 W TDP), but you can choose between other CPUs, such as: Athlon 64 X2, Sempron and Turion X2 Ultra. The integrated ATI HD3200 graphics card and the 2 GB of RAM memory give you the possibility to play some of the latest games without collapsing the system. If you want more than 2 GB of RAM you can upgrade the memory to a maximum 8 GB of RAM that because of the secondary RAM slot which is empty.

HP 6735s laptop comes with a standard 160 GB of free space but you can upgrade it to a maximum of 320 GB. Anyway, the 160 GB of free space should be enough to store your files if you use this laptop as a business machine. The Samsung optical drive is very responsive but you can choose the Lightscribe optical drive which offers you the possibility to make personalized labels for your CDs or DVDs.

The HP 6735s laptop has 15.4 inch display with a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. You can choose between a display with a matte surface or a mirror surface.  Our recommendation is to choose the matte surface because it gives you the possibility to use the laptop in a bright room and even outdoors without problems. The keyboard is pleasant and offers a positive feedback which is a good aspect for a business laptop. The keys have the typical layout, average stroke distance and the standard dimensions. The touchpad is big and reacts very well when you touch it. If you regularly use a mouse you can deactivate the touchpad by pressing a single key.

The connectivity ports available on this laptop are satisfactory. The HP 6735s laptop has 4 USB ports, an Ethernet port, an analogue VGA port, a Multimedia Card Reader, a 56k modem, an Express Card slot, Kensington Lock and headphone and microphone jacks. With the Wireless, Bluetooth connection and the VGA webcam you can stay in touch with your friends all the time.

But if you are not satisfied by these for some extra money you can have a FireWire port, UMTS and an eSATA port. The 8-cell battery will keep your laptop up and running for more than 3 hours which is very good for a business laptop. The price is not exaggerated as business laptops are known for being somewhat expensive. $1,038 may seem like a lot of money but if you compare the price with the performances you will see that you have made a good deal by buying this laptop.

HP 6735b Laptop

February 10, 2010

(0) Comments

If you want to buy a laptop but you don’t have too much money to spend we recommend that you get the HP 6735b, a laptop which offers you a great performance at a price of $829. This laptop is ideal for small-business users.

<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->

The HP 6735b laptop has a plastic case which is not very resistant but it has HP’s 3D DriveGuard protection for hard disk so you will not have big problems if you accidentally drop it. This laptop has only 5.9 pounds in weight and the weight is very important for a laptop. The case measures 14.0” x 10.5” x 1.3” and it is covered with a pleasant combination of black and gray.

The keyboard is comfortable and the keys offer you positive feedback when you type. The touch pad is very responsive and pleasant to touch but it is a little small. Like the other HP laptops, this model has a touch-sensitive strip for volume or for scrolling pages. The multimedia buttons are missing on this laptop and there is single button which you will find above the keyboard useful for sound mute.

If you are wondering about connectivity, this laptop has 4 USB ports, a VGA port, a modem port, a FireWire port, an Ethernet port, a Memory Card Reader, an Express Card slot, Wireless connection and the usual headphone and microphone jacks. The HP 6735b laptop has a 15.4 inch display with a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels but if you want a higher-resolution view you can choose a 1680 x 1050 pixels antiglare panel for only $25. You will be able to watch movies on a high quality even if your room is very dark or sunlit.

The HP 6735b laptop comes with a 2.0 GHz AMD Turion RM-70 processor and only 2 GB of RAM but that is more than sufficient for a business laptop. The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 graphics card is enough to play games like F.E.A.R or World of Warcraft without problems, but do not expect to be able to play these at the maximum details. The maximum storage capacity is 120 GB enough to store your favorite movies, pictures, music and other files. If you want more speed you can upgrade this system to a 2.2 GHz AMD Turion Dual Core ZM-82 processor and 8 GB of RAM but the standard configuration is enough for a business laptop.

If you need more free space you can buy another hard disk and replace it with the optical drive, but you will lose the DVD Burner which has an 8x speed burning. The fingerprint reader and the drive software encryption will keep your data secured and if you lose or forget your password, the HP SpareKey will help you solve the problem. The battery is a 6-cell one and it will keep your laptop up and running for more than 2 hours while you’re surfing the internet with the Wireless connection on. However, this laptop is proven to be a good laptop for people who are looking for a budget business laptop.

Alienware Area-51 M7700 Laptop

February 10, 2010

(0) Comments

The Alienware Area-51 m7700 laptop is one of the best gaming laptop on the market at this time. Company officials were able to gather a lot of functionality into a compact and efficient form. The Alienware Area-51 m7700 comes with a 3.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM and a pair of hard disks with the total capacity of 120 GB of free memory.

<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->

With such power you will be able to play your favorite games and to do many other operations at the same time. When it comes to the video card we are proud to announce you that this Alienware model is equipped with the nVidia GeForce GO 6800 with 256MB memory, one of the most powerful graphics card. With this graphics card you will be able to play most demanding games without any problems at the decent resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels.

This model has a standard TFT 17 inch display with a native resolution of 1440 x 900, but if you want some extra desktop space you can pay $200 extra for a display with a resolution of 1680 x 1050.

The keyboard includes a numerical keypad and many multimedia buttons that allow you to have instant access to different applications like Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and it even allows you to check your mailbox. Typing on the keyboard is very pleasant because the keys are not piled and they offer a very good feedback, which is very important for a fast writer. Below the keyboard you will find the touchpad which is very responsive but which is a little large for a gaming laptop. We recommend you keep a mouse plugged in all the time.

The Alienware Area-51 m7700 is equipped with a DVD writer which allows you to burn your DVDs without problems, but if you want more than that, below this drive you can find another bay which allows you to install a second optical drive. On the front side, you will find a set of multimedia control buttons which allow you to listen to your favorite music. The LED display shows the elapsed time of the song. The integrated stereo speakers and the subwoofer produce a very good sound so you will don’t need an external set of speakers.

When it comes to connections the Alienware Area-51 m7700 is equipped with 4 USB ports, a S-Video port, an Ethernet port, a modem socket, a single Type II PC Card slot, a 7-in-1 Memory Card Reader, 2 x 4-pin FireWire ports, a PS/2 port, a DVI port, some parallel and serial ports plus the indispensable headphones, line-in, line-out and microphone jacks. And that not’s all. The Bluetooth and the 802.11b/g Wireless will keep you in touch wherever you are.

However, we are disappointed when it comes to weight and battery life. The total weight of this laptop is 14.8 pounds (12.4 pounds is the weight of the laptop and 2.4 pounds is the weight of the power adapter) which is too much for a portable laptop. The battery life is very short, just 1 hour and 10 minutes under stressful test conditions and in standby only 2 hours and 50 minutes. But if you want a very good gaming laptop you will not be disappointed. The only one thing which is a quite exaggerated is the price. If you want to buy an Alienware Area-51 m7700 you will need to pay $3214, but you have to remember, performance costs.

Android 2.1 update for HTC Hero due by mid-March

February 10, 2010

(0) Comments

HTC Hero with Sense UIHere’s some good news for you folks out there who chose to get the HTC Hero Android phone on Telus. A press release was released by HTC disclosing that an Android 2.1 update with Sense will be available for the Hero by mid-March. Aside from the latest version of Android, this update will also feature a new Friend Stream widget, improved Exchange support, and a bunch of other treats. We’re not too sure though if this announcement applies to all HTC Hero phones across the globe or just particular models released in specific a region.

With that being said, we don’t see any reason why HTC Canada would not to make one available locally especially after the fiasco involving the HTC Magic and Dream Android phones on Rogers.
