Palm waiving $50 webOS app submission fee, Issues refund to developers

July 4, 2010

(0) Comments

Apple forever changed the way we use our mobile phones with the introduction of the App Store on the iPhone. Others soon followed suite after them. Google introduced the Android Market for their Google OS and Palm rolled out the App Catalog for the webOS platform.

Palm logoUnfortunately though, not everyone can proudly say their opening an app store has paid dividends for them. Palm, for instance, had a very promising start, but eventually fell out of contention. While both Apple and Google have more than 200,000 apps available in their respective app stores, Palm only has a paltry 2,684 apps in the App Catalog. The faltering popularity of their webOS-based mobile phones (Palm Pre, Palm Pixi) may have something to do with it, but we’re pretty sure the $50 app submission fee has turned off some app developers as well.

So, in order to entice more developers to hop on-board the webOS bandwagon, they’re now waiving the $50 fee and, being the generous folks that they are, are also refunding the said amount to those who have already paid for it in the past. This move by Palm will definitely turn some frowns upside down though I personally doubt this will have any immediate effect in significantly increasing the number webOS apps being offered in the App Catalog. You can read the entire announcement here.

Emblaze discontinues First Else project

July 4, 2010

(0) Comments

Here’s a little bit of sad news for those looking forward to the First Else. Emblaze has just announced that they will no longer release their first mobile phone offering to the public.

Emblaze First Else

Below is a copy of the complete announcement as posted over at Engadget:

Due to critical delays in deliveries and the current status of the project, the board has now decided to cease any further investment towards manufacturing of the First ELSE mobile device and to concentrate efforts only on licensing the ELSE Intuition platform and technology in order to realize its potential upside.

Personally, I was quite disappointed to hear this since the First Else, in my opinion, was the first device to truly offer a different user experience from the usual touchscreen phone. It’s a good thing though that they didn’t decide to can the ELSE Intuition OS as well which would have been a might shame if it happened.

So here’s to looking forward to the ELSE Intuition platform whichever device it may debut on.

Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant coming to Canada via Bell

July 4, 2010

(0) Comments

We know that a Samsung Galaxy S phone will be arriving in Canada this summer, and based on the latest info we’ve gathered, it looks like it’ll be exclusively available from Bell.

Bell Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant

Bell has just put up a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant page where people can sign-up to get the latest updates regarding this phone, and we can’t help notice the line “available only at Bell.” So the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant will apparently be an exclusive item on Bell, but more importantly, what we’d like to know is if this is the same Samsung Galaxy S phone the renowned phone maker is talking about on their website? We’re not quite sure yet, but based on the image used by both Bell and Samsung Canada, it appears that way.

If indeed this is the same Galaxy S phone, then we can expect the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant to come with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 5-megapixel AF camera, 720p HD video recording, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, push email, and runs on Android 2.1. Unfortunately though, while we now have an idea which carrier will be offering up this baby in Canada, we still don’t know how much it’ll go for and when it will exactly be released.

Nokia previews MeeGo for Handsets

July 4, 2010

(0) Comments

Nokia has just given a preview of their new MeeGo operating system, and though it’s still rough around the edges, we love where their going with this one and is definitely a welcome change from the archaic Symbian platform.

MeeGo pre-alpha release

The video below best demonstrates where they are right now with this new mobile OS jointly being developed by them and Intel. As you can see, it’s a bit sluggish when transitioning from one interface to another, but it does hold a lot of potential especially for a company who’s striving to make their mark in the growing touchscreen phone segment of the market.

This version of MeeGo is a pre-alpha release which explains the very raw state the whole platform is in right now. On the good side though, this early build already comes packed with the core MeeGo OS, Qt 4.7 with Qt Mobility API 1.0, touch-enabled status bar, and some of the more pertinent apps needed in a touchscreen phone such as an app launcher, virtual keyboard, dialer, SMS, contacts, photo viewer as well as a Fennec FireFox mobile web browser. It’s probably not ideal for everybody just yet, but good enough for some developers itching to give MeeGo a go.

If you’ve got a Nokia N900 and want to try out this version of MeeGo, you can download it here, or if you simply want to read up more on this new platform, simply head on over here for more info. We’re still not sure which device will debut MeeGo for Nokia, but many believe, including us, that it’ll be the Nokia ̕.

RIP: Microsoft Kin One, Kin Two

July 4, 2010

(0) Comments

Following the announcement by Emblaze that they’ll no longer push through with the First Else, Microsoft has now disclosed that they too have decided to cut their losses while it’s still early and terminate their Kin phone venture altogether.

Microsoft Kin One, Two

Here’s the official statement they released to the public regarding the early demise of the Kin One and Kin Two:

We have made the decision to focus exclusively on Windows Phone 7 and we will not ship KIN in Europe this fall as planned. Additionally, we are integrating our KIN team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from KIN into future Windows Phone releases. We will continue to work with Verizon in the U.S. to sell current KIN phones.

We can’t say we’re surprised to hear this given the fact that it hasn’t really performed well in terms of sales.

Was it a wise move for Microsoft to pull the plug this early on the Kin phone project rather than just allow the team to come up with a new and better model to replace the existing line-up? While I personally would have wanted to find out what else they had in store for us, I guess the rising pressure for them to deliver on a new mobile OS that can compete with the likes of the iPhone OS and Android platform is just too much for them to gamble their resources on a losing venture such as the Kin phones.

Farewell Kin phones, it was good to know you. For those who think these will be a collector’s item in the near future, it’s still available for retail in the US. The Kin One is free on a 2-yr contract on Verizon while the Kin Two is retailing for $49.99 under the same conditions.

Apple iTunes cloud service in the works, iPhone Wireless Syncing soon to be a reality?

July 4, 2010

(0) Comments

Want to enjoy wireless iTunes syncing on your iPhone? So do we, and based on the latest tip sent BGR’s way, this may soon become a reality.

iTunesThey’ve received info that Apple plans to roll out an iTunes cloud service which not only provides streaming of music and videos to various Apple devices (laptops, desktops, handhelds), but more importantly, will also introduce wireless iTunes syncing functionality for the iPhone. Aside from syncing music tracks and videos, any apps you download on your iPhone will reportedly be automatically synced to your desktop and the same scenario will also apply to any changes you make to the calendar, notes, and contacts on your iPhone.

Pretty exciting, right? Unfortunately, a launch date for this new service wasn’t included in the report. Be that as it may, this should serve as a good heads up as to what we can look forward to from Apple hopefully in the very near future.

Nokia: Yes to Meego, Symbian; No to Android

July 4, 2010

(0) Comments

Despite the growing popularity of Android, Nokia doesn’t have any plans of supporting Google’s mobile OS solution anytime soon. This was what Nokia Mobile Solution’s chief Anssi Vanjoki disclosed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

nokia

Symbian is still their key platform for the company, and they have high hopes for the upcoming MeeGo OS, the Linux-based mobile operating system jointly being developed by them and Intel. Meego, if you still haven’t heard, will be the new OS to power upcoming Nseries devices from the Finnish phone maker replacing Symbian which has long been a regular staple in the collection. Citing that they can “create more value” products by building their own software and hardware, they have no intention of supporting Android on any of their future devices.

While this revelation may surprise some, we were sort of expecting it already. Nokia has invested so much time and effort in building up Symbian, the brand is already synonymous to the OS and vice-versa. By accepting Android into the family, they will, in one way or another, be losing a bit of their identity in the process. Of course, one can easily argue that brand identity is next to nothing especially if you don’t have the sales to back it up, but in the case of Nokia, they’re still fairly doing well despite their faltering position in the global market.

Personally though, I’d love to see what a Nokia-made Android phone would look like and how it would perform, but unfortunately, it’s not up to me to decide whether this will be a reality or not. How about you guys? How many of you would like to see Nokia hop on-board the Android bandwagon?
