Playstation 3
Joaquin Reveron asked:

Accessories for wholesale PlayStation 3 will be appearing in their droves over the next six months, as third party developers try to cash in on the likely popularity of the new console. The only accessory to be included as standard is the SIXAXIS wireless controller – one of them will be included in the box with each PlayStation 3. As well as wireless operation, this accessory can also be used with a wired USB connection. This is how it will be charged. Earlier versions of this accessory were known as the Dual Shock 2, since the controller is a successor to the Dual Shock device, used as an accessory to the PlayStation 2.

Sony will also be selling a couple of other basic accessories. One is a memory card adaptor for the PlayStation 3. Armed with this, gamers will be able to connect their old PlayStation 2 memory cards to the new PlayStation 3. A remote control accessory, working over blue tooth, will enable control of the PlayStation 3 disc player. Lazy gamers won’t even have to get out of bed.

But expect the most exciting developments to be coming from third parties. So far, there is not much to see. Logitech are providing a Chill Stream controller for the PlayStation 3 – essentially identical to the PS2 Chill stream. It is due for release on November 22, and the price tag is set to be about $40. On a more pragmatic note, Nyko plan to sell a cooling device for the PlayStation 3. It will bear the same name, ‘Intercooler’, as its counterpart for the Xbox 360. But once the platform is established, the PlayStation 3 accessory market is sure to take off. Without doubt we will see driving wheels, musical instruments for games like Guitar Hero, and quirky new toys that we can barely even predict.

One disappointment is the lack of support for legacy devices. The PlayStation 3 is not guaranteed to work with hardware additions for its precursor the PlayStation 2. That means a lot of us will be stuck with a cupboard full of accessories that we cannot use with the PlayStation 3. We can hope that third-party developers will come up with some way of unofficially linking the old and the new – but do not count on it. So, the long and short of it is that we will have to wait a few more months to see a truly impressive range of accessories for getting wholesale Playstation 3. Sony message seems to be: first get your console, and only then begin the hunt for PlayStation 3 accessories.

Rose Li asked:

One of the most interesting things about the beginning period of any year is looking forward to what might happen for the next twelve months.

While electronics have been a solid prospect with buyers in previous years some are looking at the current economic conditions and wondering how they will fare for 2009

Without wanting to jinx anything things don’t look like they will be as bad as people think with electronics remaining on many people’s wishlists for the next twelve months.

Outside of that, what else is likely to happen in 2009?

Here are 10 events and trends I think we will see in 2009:

Prediction#1 High definition and high resolution gadgets will continue to gain in popularity

The high definition TV or a HD camcorder used to be outside of many people’s price range but that has changed.

It is now possible to find a HDTV in the sub US five hundred dollar mark and high definition camcorder for around US$200.

It goes without saying that more and more will be buying high definition 1080i TVs, HD camcorders and high resolution cameras in the coming months as even more mid-ranged products go high res.

Prediction#2 Digital TV will take off

The world is currently in the midst of a digital television revolution.

The DTV process started in 2003 and the first wave of countries converted is expected to finish the process between 2012 and 2013.

As a result, 2009 is an important year for many countries.

The US shifted from NTSC to ATSC US in February, with other countries being at around the half-way point of their DTV conversion.

Not everybody knows the ins and outs of the digital TV standards yet… ATSC, DVB-T and other digital TV standards around the world are a mystery to many.

However, people are actively searching for the televisions Digital TV tuners and DTV peripheral devices and will continue to do so in 2009.

Prediction#3 Projectors will gain in popularity

It used to be that you wouldn′t see a projector in anybody’s house, but technological and manufacturing developments have changed all that.

You can now get a multimedia projector or a LCD projector for less than 300 dollars US and there are several pico projectors on the market which will fit in peoples’ pockets.

Home projector and projector home theater will continue to be popular through 2009 as projector gets more coverage and consumers make their nests more comfortable.

Prediction#4 Blue Ray will get closer towards the mainstream.

The big news on the high definition disc last year was the format wars between Blue Ray and HD.

And even though HD had conceded defeat early in 2008 at CES Blue Ray hasn’t really made that much of a splash in the market outside of getting titles and players ready to ship to the populous.

2009 will be the year when almost everybody makes the shift to blue ray.

Prediction#5 Cell Phones will continue to grow steadily in developing markets.

Outside of the release of big-name cell phones like the 3G iPhone and the HTC G1 (the first phone with Google’s long-touted android OS) the cell phone market in the developed world hasn′t grown that much and doesn′t look like doing so.

Analysts say this is largely because mobile phone markets there have reached saturation point and most people will only be looking for replacement unlocked cell phones now.

That’s not the case in developing nations though where cell phones are no where near as commonly seen. In China cell phones are one of the hot ticket items with no contract cell phones being the most popular.

The popularity of the prepaid phone and the unlocked phone will continue through 2009 and in the foreseeable future.

Most customers wanting to buy unlocked cell phones are looking for phones that give them high degrees of freedom and networks don′t tend to have the data support and features that companies like AT&T and Orange do.

The GSM phone and GSM in general is likely to reign supreme as a result.

There will be a new level of importance being placed on the international phone as well, largely because of the wider market.

The quad band phone and quad band telecommunication device will be an almost essential item for anybody looking for a cell phone wholesale company or China cellphones wholesale source because they want to start a mobile phone business.

Prediction#6 Netbooks with 3G connection capabilities will become popular items.

The trend which started with the Asus Eeee for low powered low specd laptop computers suited to surfing the internet and sending emails has taken off.

Now people have realized that notebook computers don’t have to come from a brand name supplier and they are actually seeking out cheaper models.

As a result there is going to be an explosion of 3G netbooks this year. Especially since the rise of Linux has reduced dependency on punishment happy Microsoft.

Which leads me to….

Prediction#7 Linux will gain ground as an operating system

With China electronics manufacturers making many of the entry-level netbooks they will be looking for ways to reduce cost levels without causing any legal difficulties.

As Linux is open source it doesn’t give them the same level of problems as Microsoft or Macintosh.

And as Linux systems become easier to use more people will make the shift, lessening Microsoft’s hold on operating systems.

Prediction#8 WiFi standard 802.11N will finally be released

While Wifi has been gaining popularity like nobody’s business the technology has been less quick to develop.

Manufacturers have been making devices to the G standard since 2003 and have been looking for an improvement.

Signs are good that 2009 will see the release of the WLAN 802.11N standard, with the standards group releasing and signing off on drafts all the way through last year.

Improvements people think the new standard will make include the end of interference from devices like microwaves and a wider reception from more aerials.

Prediction#9 Solid state drive computers will appear

Flash storage prices have been falling faster than Motorola share values in the last couple of years.

As a result there are lots of USB storage and external storage devices that could store the contents of your computer and have room for seconds selling at very reasonable prices (compared to what they were previously).

While the price of SSD isn’t at a low enough position for everyone to have a laptop holding a SSD, they should start to appear.

Prediction#10 People will be on the look out for solar powered gadgets and green gadgets

The electronic world will go even greener in 2009.

No we’re not talking about the occasional solar powered calculator or torch this will be a stronger shift towards things currently known as green gadgets.

There can be no doubts there have been leaps and bounds in solar technology with solar panels turning up on everything from bags to the windows of buildings.

In fact a solar charger and solar battery for cell phones and smaller gadgets has gone from being a rarity to being rather common place and the number of devices that use solar power or solar energy to keep going has increased tenfold.

Solar lights are even turning up in gardens at Christmas now.

Gadgets powered by other forms of alternative energy, like dynamo-powered gadgets, and electronic appliances made with other materials, like the wooden cell phone and iPod re-encased in wood, are turning up.

People are looking for these devices too and you can bet that many solar lights and clean green gadgets will be appearing on many people’s wish list for at least the next year.

So there you go. 10 things which are likely to happen in the electronics world.

Press Release + PRWeb = Top Google Rank. True or False?

August 20, 2008

tech news
Alexis Dawes asked:

Copyright 2005 Alexis Dawes

I’ve always been a big time press release aficionado.

And up until recently I’ve steadfastly taken the low tech route by sending them out via snail-mail. Yeah, I’m a little old-fashioned when it comes to certain things. But long-time habits are hard to break when they produce great results.

Anyway, I was in the midst of launching a new piece of software August 2005. As I prepared to begin my press release prepatory ritual of labeling and stamping envelopes, it occurred to me that since it’s the summertime, and people are always in and out on vacation, perhaps I should give online press releases a spin.

(Okay the REAL reason I wanted to try it is because I was feeling particularly lazy, and I didn′t feel like labeling and stamping hundreds of envelopes. A girl has to get her mandatory poolside hours in before the leaves start falling.)

In the back of mind I kept thinking what a waste of time this online press release thing was going to be. But I decided that it couldn′t hurt… I hoped.

I went through the web sites of around half a dozen press release distributors.

Major fixtures like PRNewswire didn’t give me any toe curling experiences. The price was high and they tend to deal with a lot of corporate press material. My software is geared towards Joe and Jane Q. Public, so I didn’t feel that it was going to be a compatible match.

There were a few press release distributors that specialized in software. And their prices were well within my targeted range.

However I decided against them because most of the outlets they’d be mailing to weren′t within my target audience. I could’ve compiled my own little media list for a lot cheaper.

But that wouldn’t work either. I had a chaise lounge with a slowly fading butt imprint. I needed to fill it up again – STAT. Compiling a list just wasn’t in the cards.

That’s when I arrived at PRWeb.com. I’ve known about this site for several years now. But I’ve never given it much thought, as I really hadn’t heard any super stellar reviews about it.

Now in case you’re wondering, PRWeb distributes press releases in a variety of topical categories. You can submit your release for free. You can contribute up to $80 and get some extra perks. Or you can use their $119 PRWeb Direct service, which gets your release in prestigious positions like Yahoo News and Google News.

I opted for the PRWeb Direct service figuring that’s where I would get the best results.

I wrote my own release, submitted my order to PRWeb, then took out my Troll doll and rubbed him on the computer for good luck.

The next morning I got up and logged into my PRWeb account. They have a stat’s program that tells you how many pageviews your press released has received, and I was curious to see whether I′d gotten 5 or heaven forbid 20 clicks. (I′m such a pessimist at times!)

Well you could have pushed me over with a calm summer breeze after I saw those numbers. At 7:30 am EST my press release already had 40,000+ pageviews. By the end of day, that number had surpassed 96,000.

Did that translate into thousands of dollars worth of software sales? Well actually, it didn’t. But that press release wasn’t my best work. It was good, but not great. Silly me.

However, I did get a nice little surprise.

Two days after the release I happened to be doing some searching on Google using one of the major keyphrases mentioned in my press release. Low and behold, there on page 1 was my press release holding it down in the #5 position.

A similar search at Yahoo showed the release in the #8 position.

The number of keyword optimized sites for my targeted phrase (which is “ebay seller software”) is 24,100 at Yahoo, and 531 at Google. But that’s irrelevant news to me.

The point here is…

#1 – My marketing message made it onto the coveted first page of Google for a nicely targeted phrase. No sandbox. No waiting for my brand, new site to get spidered.

#2 – My marketing message made it onto the coveted first page of Yahoo for a nicely targeted phrase. No trying to figure out Yahoo’s algorithm, rhyme or reason.

#3 – The press release was delivering traffic to my web site BEFORE it even got listed in the top 10 at Google and Yahoo. In fact, the release was featured on many different auction resource and news sites.

PRWeb is what I like to call a Back Road tactic. It get’s you a top 10 rank, without having to go through the usual SEO channels. And it’s probably some of the best traffic you can get, short of somebody clicking directly on your site.

There aren′t many reliable and consistent Back Road’s. This is only the second one I’ve come across that fancies both Google and Yahoo. So it’s definitely worth taking advantage of.

So now back to my original question… Press Release + PRWeb = Top Google Rank… True or False?

True.

Now excuse me while I soak in the slowly diminishing rays of summer. PRWeb has got my back.

PCI Data Security: The Standard that Raised the Bar

August 1, 2008

Art Gib asked:

When consumers offer their bank or credit card over the Internet, phone or from some point of sale somewhere, it’s usually never a second thought for someone to wonder if that data is safe or not. Well, if it weren′t for standards that credit card companies and merchants adhere to, information could be hanging out there for any cyber thief to try their hand at grabbing.

Every credit card agency has its own unique standard on how transaction and personal data is handled. From MasterCard to Visa they all touch on similar aspects of how to maintain card data properly, from merchant to card agency.

Since then big stories on the tech news circuit came about in regards to card numbers being stolen from agencies and merchants alike. In light of this type of news, the big names in the Credit Card industry coalesced their security knowledge and have come up with the standard rules, a reference for all of those involved in the transaction called the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard.

How to be PCI Compliant

Credit card data is transmitted, stored and processed so there are a variety points where hackers try to interfere with the process to leak information. PCI Security Standards Organization laid out 12 main points for all the card data handlers to adhere to become PCI DSS compliant:

- Regular testing of their security systems and processes

- Create and maintain an in-house policy for addressing security issues

- Restrict physical access to credit card data and owner’s information

- Have a tracking system to monitor all access to the network and credit card data

- Those who have access maintain and use an unique ID

- Keep a policy that restricts access to only a need-to-know basis

- Routinely run up to date antivirus software

- Maintain a sound secure system and application software

- Encrypt cardholder data and sensitive information across the network

- Protect data that is stored

- Create own system passwords, never use the network software’s defaults

- Maintain a sound firewall

Any company that accepts, processes, or stores credit card information becomes PCI DSS compliant based on the number of transaction they process a year.

There are four levels of degrees that the industry distinguishes. For a point of reference, level one processors run 6 million or more transactions a year, while a level four would transact under 20,000. All must maintain compliance or risk heavy fines if there is a breach in their data control.
